In celebration of the 4Runner’s 40th anniversary, this five-part series explores the rich history and bright future of the iconic SUV.
Ever since the Toyota 4Runner made its debut in the early 1980s, it’s been a vehicle that has stood the test of time. A fan favorite for decades, the SUV’s popularity extended into the 2010s and 2020s.
Over the years, unique elements have helped the 4Runner carve out a lane all its own.
From distinctive trim levels to added passenger capacity, the fifth and sixth generations showcase qualities that have made the 4Runner a frontrunner in SUVs for four decades.
Fifth Generation (2010-2024)
For 2010, Toyota introduced the all-new fifth-generation 4Runner. More power and better mileage made it even more rugged and athletic. This new 4Runner featured a smarter, more comfortable and more versatile interior with a completely redesigned cargo area.
By 2011, brake override technology was added as standard equipment. In 2013, it had a significant redesign with a rugged new exterior design, and interior refinements that added comfort and convenience without sacrificing the SUV’s signature performance capability and value.
In addition to retaining its DNA as a body-on-frame, the 4Runner was updated for 2020 with new multimedia, including Android Auto™, Apple CarPlay® and Amazon Alexa compatibility. Plus, Toyota’s Safety Sense System became standard on all grades.
Sixth Generation (2025)
Today, the key elements that have made the 4Runner a standout in the market for 40 years continue to drive the groundbreaking SUV forward.
For starters, the sixth-generation 2025 4Runner is built on the TNGA-F global truck platform, which is shared with Tacoma, Land Cruiser, Tundra and Sequoia. In addition to the high-strength steel ladder frame, this strong platform features a multi-link coil suspension at the rear and a double wishbone suspension at the front. In addition to adding strength, these features improve the comfort of passengers.
What’s more, all the 4Runner’s standard grades (SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, and Limited) have a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 278 horsepower and 317 lb. ft. of torque paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
In terms of enhancements, the Platinum grade is a first for the 4Runner. Its sleek black exterior and standout styling elements exemplify luxury and refinement without sacrificing tradition.
Overall, the all-new 4Runner is a shining example of fusing tried-and-true elements with innovative features that continue to accelerate the nameplate’s growth.
