Engine producer, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Alabama (TMMAL), employs more than 1,500 team members and builds more than 3,000 engines each day. Producing one-third of Toyota’s engines in the U.S. at its 1.2 million-square-foot facility, TMMAL is the only plant to build four-cylinder, V-6, and V-8 engines under one roof. TMMAL powers popular Toyota vehicles like the Highlander, RAV4, Corolla, Tundra, Tacoma, and Sequoia.
TMMAL broke ground in 2001 and assembled its first engine in 2003. Since then, the Huntsville, Alabama facility has been expanded seven times, totaling a $1.2 billion investment. The latest $288 million investment will allow new four-cylinder and V-6 engine lines to inflate production capacity by about 35%, increase product flexibility, and help better meet demand. The two new manufacturing lines will create 450 new jobs, boosting the plant’s employment to about 1,800 people.
Designated as one of two model sustainable plants in North America with zero landfills, the Huntsville plant has won the EPA Energy Star Challenge for Industry award for five consecutive years. Even more, the site has won the Toyota North America award for outstanding energy and water management for 13 years straight.
Those initiatives are just one of many ways TMMAL is considering the environment. In addition, TMMAL has a 3.3-acre solar array that generates 1.6 megawatts of solar-generated energy to help power the plant. The $2.7-million-dollar project expects to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 1,732 metric tons annually. The plant also reduces waste by recycling everything from metals and plastics to converting used cooking oil into biodiesel fuel.
For TMMAL employees, finding opportunities to make an impact on the environment and the local community is all a part of the job. The employees currently serve on 20 local nonprofit boards, and since 2003, TMMAL has donated a total of $12 million to local nonprofits. In 2020, it donated $700,000. As a diversified workforce, employees live locally, but represent 14 countries, 32 U.S. states, and speak 20 different languages.
TMMAL is the company’s engine capital in North America, and the power of its engine is the heartbeat of Toyota’s vehicles.
