Julie Hamp is chief communications officer for Toyota Motor North America, Inc. (TMA). She is responsible for marketing, product and brand communications for the Toyota, Lexus and Scion brands; corporate reputation; stakeholder engagement; investor relations and sales communications; manufacturing communications; and corporate advertising. She leads the company’s communications and engagement efforts at a time when Toyota is reporting record sales, launching an unprecedented number of new vehicles and investing more than $1.5 billion in U.S. products and operations.
Prior to joining Toyota, Hamp was chief communications officer and senior vice president, communications and consumer relations for PepsiCo. In this role, Hamp was responsible for global media relations; brand building and consumer engagement; reputation management; executive communications; consumer relations; global talent development; crisis communication and issues management; and sustainability communications. She also was a member of the company’s executive council and foundation board of directors, and led a global team of more than 350 communications and consumer relations professionals.
Before joining PepsiCo, Hamp was vice president, communications for General Motors’ European region in Zurich. She was a member of both the GME and GM corporate communications strategy boards, and led a team of 140 regional communications professionals in 27 countries. Hamp was responsible for media relations, brand publicity and corporate communications for Saab, Opel, Vauxhall and Chevrolet, partnering with GM leaders in 27 countries.
Hamp’s Prior positions within GM include general director of communications for the Latin America, Africa and Middle East Region; general director for sales, service and marketing communications in North America; and vice president of communications for Saturn. During her tenure at GM, she covered communications in all areas of the business, including engineering, manufacturing, sales, service and marketing communications.
A native of Queens, NY, Hamp holds a B.S. in Communications from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich., and her post-graduate studies include participation in the GM-Harvard Business School’s Executive Development Program with an emphasis on Asian studies. Previously she sat on the Board of Directors of the PepsiCo Foundation and Purchase College. She currently represents Toyota on the board of the Ad Council and is an accredited member of the Public Relations Society of America and the Arthur W. Page Society.
