TORRANCE, Calif. (Oct. 21, 2015) – Toyota’s auto hauling carrier, Toyota Transport, was recognized today for its mindful approach to the environment. Toyota Transport moves approximately 430,000 new Toyota and Lexus vehicles to dealerships every year, on the west coast, and takes pride to make those moves as environmentally efficient as possible. Because of those efforts, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded Toyota Transport with a SmartWay Excellence Award.

This is the second time Toyota has won this award. In 2013, Toyota Logistics Services won the Excellence Award as a shipper.

The award recognizes the top one percent of SmartWay partners with superior environmental performance. It aims to accelerate the availability, adoption and market penetration of advanced fuel efficient technologies and operational practices in the freight supply chain, while helping companies save fuel, lower costs and reduce adverse environmental impacts.

“Toyota Transport is committed to reducing its environmental impact,” said Kirk Welch, senior analyst, Toyota Transport compliance. “We are honored to accept this award and look forward to continually improving and continually exceeding SmartWay’s expectations.”

Toyota is committed to utilizing only SmartWay highway transportation carriers. These carriers’ have been tested and verified, through the SmartWay Assessment Tool, as carriers that continually reduce fuel consumption and lower emissions. Toyota’s logistics partners are committed to investing in enhanced new equipment and industry best practices in order to maintain their SmartWay certification.

EPA’s SmartWay Transport Partnership is a market-driven initiative that empowers businesses to move goods in the cleanest, most energy-efficient way possible, while protecting public health and reducing the impacts of climate change. Since 2004, SmartWay Partners have saved 144.3 million barrels of oil and $20.6 billion in fuel costs. SmartWay’s clean air achievements (61.7 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, 1,070,000 tons of nitrogen oxides, and 43,000 tons of particulate matter emissions avoided) help to protect the well-being of citizens.
