Ian Cartabiano is president, CALTY, overseeing the Advanced Design Studio in Newport Beach, Calif., working with TMC, for both Toyota and Lexus brand concepts.
After graduating from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif., Cartabiano joined CALTY’s Newport Beach studio, where he took part in a variety of high-profile projects, including playing a leading role as chief designer of the Lexus LF-LC Concept and Toyota C-HR. Other notable projects he led include the 2018 Toyota Camry, which he designed while on assignment at Toyota’s headquarters in Japan, and the Toyota Concept-i, Toyota FT-4X and Lexus LF-1 Limitless concepts.
In 2018, Toyota took his talents to the French Riviera assigning him to direct ED2 (Toyota Europe Design Development) as president and design director. There, he was responsible for the Lexus LF-30 Electrified Concept, Toyota Aygo X, the Car Design Award winning Toyota EV Compact Cruiser, Toyota bZ Compact SUV Concept, 2024 Toyota C-HR and the groundbreaking Toyota IMV Zero.
In the summer of 2022, Cartabiano returned to CALTY as vice president of Advanced Design in Newport beach, CA where he oversaw the Toyota Land Cruiser Sport EV and FT-3e Concepts for the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show, until he was promoted to president in 2025.
Cartabiano was also awarded Art Center’s Great Teacher of the Year Award in 2016, where he was a professor from 1999 to 2017.
Cartabiano spends his spare time with family and friends, painting, traveling and hoping his 1974 vintage project car will someday run.
