Mike Sweers is the executive vice president and chief technology officer, Toyota Motor North America, Research and Development (TMNA R&D) headquartered in York Township, Michigan. He is responsible for all North American vehicle research and development and also serves on TMNA’s North American Executive Committee.
Sweers also serves as senior professionals/senior management member at global parent company Toyota Motor Corporation.
In July 2010, Sweers became the chief engineer for the Toyota Tundra followed by chief engineer of the Toyota Tacoma in April 2012. Prior to these appointments, he was promoted to vice president of Engineering Design, Interior.
Since joining Toyota in 1990, Sweers has held several leadership roles of increasing responsibility at Toyota Technical Center and TMNA R&D. These roles include senior manager in the Interior Design and Liaison department, manager of TMNA R&D’s Engineering Design 2 (ED2) department, general manager of Engineering Design 6 (interior design), general manager of Engineering Design 5, and vice president of Engineering Design. A year after Sweers joined Toyota, he became a principal engineer with a focus primarily on seat and seatbelt design.
Prior to joining Toyota, Sweers served as a project engineer with Chrysler Corporation from 1986 to 1990, and started his career at General Motors Oldsmobile Division, later becoming BOC J/N Platform.
Sweers earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Detroit. He followed this with a specialty in Quality Control Management, for which he graduated magna cum laude, with an Associates of Applied Science from Lansing Community College. He has received U.S. patents for automotive seating and interior trim components. He is a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and is a senior member of the Society of Plastics Engineers.
