]]>In Good Company
For Amanda Young, environmental engineer at Toyota Motor Manufacturing West Virginia (TMMWV), life at Toyota has been pleasant thanks to her peers and positive network.
“My experience is that women at Toyota are extremely supportive of each other,” she says. “I was nominated to attend a women’s conference last year and met some amazing women who are still my friends to this day. We want to see each other succeed and be role models for others.”
Young, who’s worked at TMMWV since 2021, says no two days are alike and that’s how she likes it.
“My team and I are working every day to make sure Toyota West Virginia is always in compliance and meeting our goals,” she said. “We physically inspect equipment, write reports, and mitigate any issues as they arise. I’m also part of the Region 1 team that assists non-manufacturing sites with their environmental compliance. This requires physically traveling to their sites to support them through audits as well as supporting [them] remotely.”
Young also works with the sustainability team through the biodiversity working group. Her duties across Toyota North America (TNA) include protecting native species and helping build native habitat.
Young says she knew very few women in the industry where she previously worked. However, when she came to Toyota and attended her first Wildlife Habitat Council conference, she was pleasantly surprised.
“My entire table was women from Toyota, and they were all environmental engineers,” she says. “It made me so proud to sit among such a group of smart, supportive, innovative women. These women inspire me to be better and work harder. Women who are innovative are crucial to the future of any company.”
When Colleagues Become Family
Candice Nash, a Toyota D+I consultant based in Plano, has worked at the company for the past 20 years. The key to her longevity? Doing what she loves.
“I have the honor and pleasure of turning my passion into a paycheck in my current role,” she says. “I collaborate with senior leaders of Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) to design and execute customized diversity and inclusion strategies.”
Nash says that her work gives her joy. It’s the goal of the D+I team to foster an environment where all employees can be their authentic selves and be celebrated for who they are.
“It makes me happy to have the privilege to be a part of something so special,” she says.
Cultivating a sense of belonging is a driving force for Nash. She nurtures and provides employees with support, attention, and care — an embodiment of Toyota’s Mendomi approach, which means taking care of workers like they’re family.
“I’ve made many invaluable relationships over the years,” she says. “Many of those who have gone on to their next chapter — retirement — keep in touch and still visit each other. I’m grateful for the power of connecting with people and making lifelong friends at work who’ve become family.”
Nash holds those strong bonds and principles close to heart. The former East Coast resident shares her success with those who instilled those values in her from the beginning: her family.
“I’ve been blessed to share this journey with my roomies, also known as my parents,” she says. “I built a Next Gen home for them. My parents and my Nana moved here from New Jersey. We haven’t looked back and thoroughly enjoy our new home here, where the stars at night are big and bright!”
Be Confident in Your Own Lane
Surprisingly for Kayla Ledbetter, a team leader in maintenance at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Alabama (TMMAL), working in a male-dominated industry hasn’t been too difficult.
“I personally have not faced too many issues,” she says. “I enjoy empowering other females and answering questions about how they could get in this field as well.”
She believes women have so much to offer in STEM spaces.
“Women are usually detail-oriented and observant,” she says. “It’s also important to break stereotypes and show that women can do just about anything they set their minds to.”
Ledbetter is proof of that. She’s a pro at fixing things and even built a truck when she was just 14.
The daughter of a mechanic, she grew up observing the ins and outs of vehicles.
“I love working on vehicles in my spare time,” she says. “My most prized possession is a 1982 Toyota pickup I restored myself.”
Ledbetter, who’s worked at TMMAL for more than two years, is grateful that her day-to-day work life is in a friendly environment that’s supportive.
“My job is so rewarding, and I’m happy I can work for a company that allows me to succeed,” she says.
She encourages other women to pursue positions that meet their professional standards and align with their passions regardless of outside perceptions.
“Don’t be afraid to go for what you want, no matter the opinion of others,” she says. “Your happiness is all that matters. Prove it to yourself, and don’t let anything stop you from achieving your goals.”
Cultivating the Next Generation of Leaders
When it comes to bringing in Toyota’s new crop of talent, Sherry McCaskill is on the front lines. As the HR Talent Acquisition manager, College Programs, Diversity & Employment Branding at TMNA, she’s the first entry point for many seeking a career at the company.
“My team and I are responsible for attracting and recruiting great diverse talent, and mentoring the next generation of talent at Toyota,” she says. “We recruit, source, manage and hire over 500 interns/co-ops and trainees across North America.”
She also oversees the company’s multi-year acquisition strategy, which taps into strong community partnerships and leverages Toyota’s external social media strategy to connect and attract the best and most diverse talent.
“Because Talent Acquisition touches every business unit across North America, producing happiness is key to my role,” she says. “We need the right talent in the pipeline to meet our current and future needs — people who are engaged, skilled and ready to help support Toyota’s mobility vision. In my role, that means finding incredible talent and then helping them connect to purposeful and meaningful work across Toyota.”
Identifying future leaders and then placing them on a path that aligns with their own career goals is one thing, but ensuring their contentment and success is another — it’s what makes McCaskill’s role so gratifying and meaningful.
“Happiness is a given if our team members are connected, heard, engaged and purposed,” says McCaskill, who’s had several roles during her 23 years at Toyota. “Team members are the heart and the soul of the organization. Without them, we can’t function in unity or bring about innovative change.”
In addition to leading her team, she’s also a proud member of business partnering groups (BPGs) like African American Collaborative (AAC) and Women Influencing and Impacting Toyota (WIIT).
“I enjoy collaborating when I can,” she says. “Our people are what I like about working for Toyota — that and the fact that Toyota’s philosophies are in our DNA. During my time with Toyota, I’ve built and nurtured some great relationships across the enterprise. I feel fortunate to have been given many wonderful opportunities to develop and grow, professionally and personally.”

]]>The post Three Sisters Building Careers in Manufacturing at Toyota Kentucky appeared first on Toyota USA Newsroom.
]]>“We’re all working in the same plant, and if they need anything from me, I’m there to be supportive,” says Bastin.
The family’s career journey started with the Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (FAME) Advanced Manufacturing Technician (AMT) program. Founded by Toyota in 2010, FAME is currently operated by the Manufacturing Institute, the National Association of Manufacturers’ workforce development and education affiliate.
Completion of the two-year AMT program leads to an associate degree and the FAME certificate. Students undergo a combination of classroom education and hands-on technical training, allowing participants to graduate ready to enter the workforce.
“They came to my school — the AMT program — and I was like, let’s give this a shot,” says Bastin. “I didn’t realize I would have this kind of potential. This was cool stuff.”
Part of the Family
Bastin was the trailblazer, being the first in her family to graduate from FAME. Now as her sisters are working their way through the program, she’s around to help with schoolwork and lend a supportive ear. Craven and Geneve are simultaneously working at Toyota while completing their classroom instruction and are expected to graduate in May of next year.
“It’s nice to have that sister love to lean on,” says Craven. “They understand the frustration of school and work, and it’s been a pleasure to work with them.”
Beyond the family ties, all of the sisters have found a supportive environment at the company. Craven says of being at Toyota Kentucky that she feels like part of the network of Toyota.
“Everyone has been super nice, super helpful and super welcoming,” says Geneve. “When you start out, it can seem intimidating, but everyone’s willing to help you out. They really want you to succeed.”
Paying It Forward
Something the sisters know firsthand is how important a positive environment is at work, especially for women fostering careers in traditionally male-dominated fields like manufacturing.
“The mentorship I got helped me gain my confidence while I was learning,” says Bastin. “And even now, the teamwork that goes into everything, every day — it’s been a nice surprise.”
Although the sisters are taking different career paths, they are excited and surprised to be working at the same manufacturing facility. Bastin had taken some robotics classes in middle school prior to joining the ATM program. While Craven had always enjoyed working with her hands, Geneve moved to manufacturing after working in customer service.
“Working in manufacturing doesn’t necessarily mean you’re working on a factory floor,” says Geneve. “There’s an administrative side, an HR side —there’s a lot more to manufacturing than people expect.”
The sisters are working to challenge the prevailing misconceptions about manufacturing careers, hoping their experiences and programs like FAME raise awareness of the diverse opportunities within the sector.
“I do see us being examples for women who might not normally see themselves in the field,” says Craven. “You want to see women come in and say, hey, I did it, and you can, too. It’s nice to see yourself reflected back.”

]]>The post Advancing STEM Education: Toyota Provides Up To $9.3 Million In Arizona Schools appeared first on Toyota USA Newsroom.
]]>“Our goal is to increase awareness of future STEM careers while helping build sustainable programs in the communities where our Toyota team members live and work,” said Tellis Bethel, group vice president of social innovation, Toyota. “With nearly $2 million in the first year, and more to come in years ahead, we’re looking forward to the expansion of Driving Possibilities in the Phoenix area.”
Driving Possibilities focuses on PreK-12 education and builds on existing programs across the country. The long-term initiative’s aim is to close educational gaps for students through innovative, hands-on STEM programming while addressing the essential needs of students and families.
“Ever since we opened our first office in Chandler in 2001, Toyota team members have been actively involved in giving back to this community,” says Scott Cooke, Toyota Financial Services president and CEO. “We consider it a privilege to support educators from the Tempe and Chandler school districts who work so diligently to give young people the knowledge and skillsets which will allow them to pursue their dreams.”
Today’s announcement supports a STEM Curriculum Pathway for elementary and middle school students. The grants will also help build community resource centers to house after-school and essential services to help provide for students and their families.
In 2022, the Toyota USA Foundation announced Driving Possibilities, a national, career readiness and community engagement initiative, launched to prepare youth for the careers of tomorrow. It is a unique approach that brings together educators, local and national nonprofits, and communities to create limitless possibilities for all. With efforts across the PreK-12 education continuum, the program is the largest and most comprehensive in Toyota’s history. The initiative is funded by Toyota USA Foundation, Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) and Toyota Financial Services (TFS).
Chandler and Tempe area schools are the sixth site to launch Driving Possibilities programming, which is based on more than 60 years of active support in Toyota communities across the U.S. and builds off the successful model in West Dallas.

]]>The post In Celebration of Black History Month: Two Toyota Employees Reflect on the Power of Diverse Leadership and Volunteerism appeared first on Toyota USA Newsroom.
]]>From the company’s business partnering groups (BPGs) to its community outreach programs, there are numerous opportunities to share, learn, grow, and give back. It’s one of the reasons Pamela Bass and Terence Proctor are proud to work at Toyota.
Amplifying Diverse Leadership
After seeing the positive impact the African American Coalition (AAC) had on Toyota Kentucky (TMMK), Bass knew that she wanted to join the group.
Bass, who’s been with the company for nearly 30 years, works with the Body Weld Production team. She is an AAC member and currently serves as the group’s senior manager advisor.
She said the group’s mission is to help and support the development of African Americans, while also bridging the gap between African American communities and the company through community outreach.
The AAC’s vision is to ensure African American employees are represented and recognized at all levels of the company and serve as key contributors to the success of Toyota.
“Diversity in leadership is crucial as it brings a greater depth of experience and perspective, fostering innovation and a better understanding of employees,” Bass says. “Diversity in leadership brings enhanced innovation, creates smarter decisions and inclusive leaders, and advances company culture while improving employee satisfaction. Diverse leadership will also attract diverse talent and foster better working relationships.”
Making Time To Give Back
Giving back is a common thread throughout Toyota that extends beyond BPGs — it’s woven into the fabric of the company. It resonates and rings true for Terence Proctor, a site services manager at Toyota West Virginia. The longtime Toyota employee is passionate about volunteering his time to help those who are disadvantaged in his community — and around the world.
“While growing up, I was taught that no one makes it in life on their own, especially the disadvantaged,” he says. “I am drawn to paying back the help I received growing up.”
When it comes to volunteering, Proctor chooses to dedicate his time assisting the smallest members of society: children. So, he gravitates toward opportunities that directly support kids, like schools, orphanages, food programs and housing.
Proctor plans two or three mission trips a year to support children. Last year, he supported the education of children by setting up computer labs in local community centers and schools.
“Some volunteer efforts span a weekend, and others cover a couple of weeks, but I support education programs throughout the year,” Proctor says.
Common Ground
Bass and Proctor believe Toyota provides the support and resources to help them accomplish their professional and personal goals. Whether it’s inspiring other organizations to implement more diversity initiatives or encouraging employees to volunteer in the communities Toyota serves, the company is continuously working to improve access to opportunities.
While making an impact is always the driving force behind progress, Bass acknowledges that breaking barriers isn’t always easy. She often refers to Shirley Chisholm’s (the first African American woman to be elected to the United States Congress) famous quote for inspiration: “If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.”

]]>The post The Evolution of a Legend: The All-New 2024 Land Cruiser appeared first on Toyota USA Newsroom.
]]>“The complete redesign of the all-new Land Cruiser amounts to an incredible evolution of the vehicle. We know this new iteration had big shoes to fill, and I am absolutely thrilled to report it has exceeded our high expectations.” said Mike Tripp, vice president of Toyota Marketing. “This vehicle retains its legendary capability, and now it offers a significantly lower starting price, tons of creature comforts and even more maneuverability on the trails. We are excited for the world to experience the next edition of Land Cruiser.”
MAX Performance
The 250 series Land Cruiser was completely reimagined and redesigned for 2024. All Land Cruisers will now exclusively feature a powerful turbocharged i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain mated to a full-time four-wheel drive system. This premium hybrid powertrain produces 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque.
Toyota’s i-FORCE MAX powertrains are expertly engineered, a testament to the company’s long-standing history of performance-driven and fuel-efficient vehicles. The 2024 Land Cruiser features an electric motor in the bell housing between the 2.4-liter turbo-charged engine and the eight-speed automatic transmission. This design offers maximum performance and increased efficiency with the legendary reliability that has been synonymous with Land Cruiser since the beginning. Land Cruiser has received an EPA-estimated 23 MPG combined rating which is a higher combined MPG rating than any previous iteration.
On Lock
A staple of Land Cruiser’s heritage is its go-anywhere capability. Engineers embraced this legacy when they included center and rear-locking differentials as standard for all grades. The electronic locking rear differential can help split the power 50/50 to the rear wheels for improved traction and reduced wheel spin on rough terrain. Another new addition to Land Cruiser is the available front stabilizer bar disconnect mechanism (SDM), which increases suspension flex with the push of a button. With the front stabilizer bar disconnected, articulation increases significantly helping the front tires to stay in contact with the ground. Multi-Terrain Select, which is now functional in both 4WD High and 4WD Low, offers adjustable settings to help control wheel spin on a variety of terrains, such as Mud, Dirt and Sand.
Land Cruiser adopts an updated CRAWL Control function that acts as a low-speed, off-road cruise control with five selectable speeds. Downhill Assist Control is another standard off-road feature that helps the driver navigate descents by limiting the speed of the vehicle. Additional traction aids include vehicle stability control (VSC) and an automatic limited-slip differential (Auto LSD). Land Cruiser’s front overhang was decreased for greater approach, providing up to a 31-degree approach, a 25-degree breakover and 22-degree departure angles.
Oftentimes, when adventuring off the beaten path, drivers encounter challenging and technical trails. The available Multi-Terrain Monitor system can act like a spotter by leveraging cameras to display the environment around the vehicle on the touchscreen, exposing potential obstacles looming ahead.
From the Frame up
Land Cruiser is built on the TNGA-F global truck platform that is shared with Tundra, Sequoia and Tacoma. The core objective of this platform is to provide refined handling, premium comfort and improved capability. Engineers behind this next-generation frame were able to increase rigidity and improve ride comfort by using new innovations, such as laser blank welding technology that reduces mass in areas it’s not needed while reinforcing areas that do. This high-strength boxed frame means that Land Cruiser is over built and ready to tackle even the harshest of environments. This enhanced frame, paired with the powerful i-FORCE MAX powertrain, allows Land Cruiser to tow up to 6,000 pounds.
Premium Feel, Even on the Trail
Land Cruiser is Toyota’s original SUV and, as such, it must check all the boxes: legendary capability, with the latest advanced technology, high safety technology, and premium touches for the driver and passengers. The adoption of the modern TNGA-F platform not only adds strength, but it also improves the vehicle’s ride comfort and on-road manners. Passengers aren’t punished for the vehicle’s capability either, as the available plush power heated and ventilated front seats and reclining rear seats make long road trips a breeze.
A new 8 or available 12.3-inch multimedia touchscreen displays Toyota’s latest Audio Multimedia system, designed and engineered by Toyota’s Texas-based Connected Technologies team. The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto compatibility and pairs well with the available premium 14-speaker JBL® audio system. Qi® wireless charging is available with enhanced power output. Dual USB-C charging ports are included in the front row and two for second-row passengers. There are two more USB-Cs available and a standard 2400-Watt AC inverter house type plug (120V) in the cargo area. An available 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster with four different styles and customizable widgets is available.
Standard on all grades is a Smart Key System with push-button start. With an active Remote Connect trial or subscription on select models, an available Digital Key connects with compatible smartphones to allow vehicle entry, tailgate access and vehicle starting (4G network dependent). The Digital Key can also be remotely shared with others to give more control over vehicle access rather than giving someone the physical key. Additionally, a Smart Card key is available, which is a credit card-sized smart key that allows the driver to carry their key with them wherever they go for added convenience.
Simple Grade Strategy
Land Cruiser is ready to help drivers tackle the road ahead – whether to haul passengers, gear or both. It will be available in three grades: Land Cruiser 1958, Land Cruiser and the First Edition.
This simple grade strategy starts with the well-equipped 1958 grade that is a nod to the vehicle’s roots. In 1958, Land Cruiser made its North American debut as a focused off-road vehicle. That legacy inspired Toyota engineers for this all-new generation. The 1958 grade harkens back to the Land Cruisers of old with a significantly lower starting MSRP of just $55,950.* It comes equipped with retro-inspired round LED headlamps, heated fabric seats and the iconic “TOYOTA” heritage grille. It also adds modern touches like standard Smart Key System with push button start, Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), a 7-inch full-color multi-information display, automatic climate control, five USB-C ports, an 8-inch Audio Multimedia Touchscreen, six-speaker sound system, and wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto® compatibility. Fans of off-roading will also appreciate the standard locking center and rear differentials, rear coil springs, full-time four-wheel drive, two-speed transfer case, CRAWL Control, the powerful 2400W AC inverter and a standard brake controller.
The Land Cruiser grade builds on the 1958 grade with a focus on refinement and added convenience. It adds rectangular LED headlamps, power heated and ventilated SofTex®-trimmed front seats, a 12.3-inch full color multi-information display, power liftgate, a 12.3-inch Audio Multimedia Touchscreen, and a 10-speaker sound system. Additional trail features include Rigid® color selectable LED fog lights, Stabilizer Disconnect Mechanism (SDM), Multi-Terrain Select (MTS), and a Multi-Terrain Monitor (MTM) system.
Also available on the Land Cruiser grade is the Premium Package, which upgrades the standard seats to leather-trimmed heated and ventilated power front seats with lumbar support and driver memory features. A 14-speaker JBL premium audio system, digital rearview mirror, Head-up Display (HUD), illuminated entry, power moonroof, center console cool box and two additional USB-C ports in the cargo area.
The First Edition grade builds on the Land Cruiser grade by adding standard premium features and exclusivity. It includes all the features in the Premium Package and the retro round LED headlamps, unique 18-inch wheels and the “First Edition” logo embossed on the door panels. The grade also comes equipped with off-road must-haves like a roof rack, rock rails and a front skid plate.
The 2024 Land Cruiser will be offered in seven exterior color choices: Ice Cap, Wind Chill Pearl, Underground, Black, Meteor Shower, Trail Dust and Heritage Blue. The two-tone Trail Dust and Heritage Blue exterior colors feature a Grayscape roof.
An Ode to the Past
This all-new Land Cruiser is a nod to models of the past. Early generations featured a boxy look with a flat roof, short overhangs and “TOYOTA” grilles — all of which come through in the 250 series. Toyota’s North American-based CALTY Design Research studio worked closely with the global development team to establish the design direction with no detail overlooked. The design team used four key terms to inspire them during development: authentic, reliable, timeless and professional. The all-new Land Cruiser is derived from a pure expression of form aligning with function.
That inspiration led to the unique design features that are offered on the 1958 grade and First Edition grades, namely the iconic round LED headlights and “TOYOTA” heritage grille, while Land Cruiser grades upgrade to slim, rectangular headlights reminiscent of the 60 series. A squared body profile resembles past Land Cruisers, and the A pillar is pushed back while the belt line was lowered, not only to complement the look, but for better outward visibility on the trails.
Designers made sure to fit modern features into the design as well, like all LED lighting and available 20” wheels, silhouette shaped roof rack and color selectable Rigid® fog lights.
“Land Cruiser is a global icon with a proven track record of conquering some of the harshest conditions, and it was the global design team’s vision to bring that to life in this modern era,” said Kevin Hunter, president, CALTY Design Research. “The result is a refreshed balance of modern heritage that draws from Land Cruisers of old and takes the vehicle back to its roots.”
The Iconic Off-Roader
Legends never die and the Land Cruiser’s return rounds out the incredibly capable and rugged line-up of tough body-on-frame vehicles that Toyota offers. These vehicles give customers more choice when it comes to finding a vehicle that can keep up with their dynamic lifestyles. They are designed to outlast almost anything the elements throw their way, and their incredible capability gives owners the tools they need to get out and discover all the hidden wonders the world has to offer.
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 Standard
All 2024 Land Cruiser models come standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, Toyota’s suite of active safety and convenience systems. This suite of features includes:
Proactive Driving Assist is new to Toyota Safety Sense. When system operating conditions are met, using the vehicle’s camera and radar, this system is designed to provide gentle braking into curves or gentle braking and/or steering to help support driving tasks such as distance control between a preceding vehicle, pedestrian, or bicyclist. Proactive Driving Assist is not a substitute for the Pre-Collision System and operates in different circumstances.
Including the addition of Proactive Driving Assist, the Toyota Safety Sense features have been enhanced for TSS 3.0:
In addition to TSS 3.0, other available features include Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), which is designed to help detect and warn you of vehicles approaching or positioned in the adjacent lanes and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) for added peace of mind by helping to detect vehicles approaching from either side while backing out and alerting you with a visual and audible warning. Hill Start Assist Control (HAC) also comes standard.
Beyond Zero Vision
As part of Toyota’s diverse portfolio approach toward a carbon-neutral future, Land Cruiser is the latest hybrid offering in the lineup to wear the Beyond Zero badge. Today, Toyota offers 17 electrified vehicles for customers to choose from. With 13 hybrid models, two plug-in hybrid models, the bZ4X battery electric vehicle (BEV), and the zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell Mirai, Toyota provides more choices than any other automaker for customers to reduce their carbon footprint.
Limited Warranty
Toyota’s 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover the powertrain for 60,000 miles and against perforation from corrosion for 60 months with no mileage limitation. Hybrid-related components that require repairs needed to correct defects in materials or workmanship are covered for 8 years/100,000 miles, whichever comes first from original date of first use when sold as new. The hybrid battery is covered for 10 years/150,000 miles, whichever comes first, and is transferable across ownership.
The 2024 Land Cruiser also comes with ToyotaCare, a plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance, for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first, and 2 years, unlimited mileage of Roadside Assistance.

]]>The post Grace Mullings Shares How the ‘Ubuntu’ Mentoring Program Supports Black TFS Employees appeared first on Toyota USA Newsroom.
]]>However, her goal was shattered when she realized “I can’t stand the sight of blood!” says Mullings with a laugh. “Now how does that happen? How is that going to work?”
After realizing that blood made her squeamish, Mullings knew she needed to move on from her childhood dream. Not knowing what she wanted to do, she decided to pursue a Master of Business Administration degree while she tried to figure it out and along the way she discovered her true passion — finance.
Today, Mullings is far from the dentist chair and is currently the vice president and chief accounting officer for Toyota Financial Services (TFS) America Oceania Region. She started with TFS in 2005 as the director of accounting policy and left after a decade to work at a private equity firm. Mullings returned to TFS in 2020 and hasn’t looked back.
But in a sense, she has done exactly that. She’s continued to look back over her extensive career to ensure that other young professionals in finance, especially Black men and women who may want to follow in her footsteps at TFS, have the support and encouragement they need.
Creating a Circle of Fellowship
In 2020, Mullings started Ubuntu — a mentoring circle that takes its name from the African concept meaning “humanity towards others.”
“It means so many things,” says Mullings. “It means respect and helpfulness, sharing, community, trust, unselfishness, all the things that I was thinking about for a mentorship circle for our accounting, tax, and finance professionals. I think it just ties in so well with one of Toyota’s main pillars: Respect for People, so that just resonated with me and that’s what we called it.”
Twice a quarter, about a dozen Ubuntu participants come together virtually to connect, discuss relevant happenings at TFS and learn from each other. They also address the importance of networking and personal branding. This year, the group also plans to have their first in person meeting.
Mullings started the program to primarily support Black TFS accounting, tax, and finance professionals.
“The reason I initially started the program in this manner was the dearth of Black professionals I saw while navigating the finance and accounting world. And even now there’s just not a lot of Black professionals,” Mullings says. “The group was really created to promote fellowship and understanding and to retain and not just retain, but really help enhance the careers of Black accounting, tax, and finance professionals at TFS.”
She adds, “As I was growing up in the accounting and finance profession, there wasn’t a focus on development, there wasn’t that sense of community, and you didn’t have mentors to help you gain a better understanding of how the (financial) environment works and how to think through any (financial/accounting) issues that you came across. Because of this experience, I thought a mentoring circle was really a good way for me to give back.”
Now into its fourth year, Ubuntu has seen participants earn promotions and continue developing in their careers. One team member even moved from TFS to Toyota Motor North America for a new professional challenge within the Toyota family.
“This is really a good profession, and I want to show others how you can navigate and be successful in this profession,” Mullings says.
The Mother of Mentorships
While she’s seen several successes within Ubuntu, she credits one person for making a difference in her life both personally and professionally: her mother.
She says her mother’s bold, ambitious, and fearless personality left a lasting impression on her. Her mother’s encouragement during her early days as a certified public accountant (CPA) is what propelled her forward and gave Mullings the confidence she needed to forge ahead.
When Mullings first became a licensed CPA, she asked her parents if she could practice by preparing their taxes.
“My father said, ‘Oh, no.’ And my mother was like, ‘Okay, I’m going to file separately so you can practice.,’” Mullings recalls. “I mean, that sort of encouragement was just amazing.”
Although her mother was her primary guiding light, she was also mentored by several individuals throughout her career.
“I had many mentors,” Mullings says. “I was mentored, and I didn’t really understand I was being mentored.”
In fact, one of those supportive colleagues was largely responsible for her career at TFS. He mentored her at another company and pushed her outside of her comfort zone.
“And I’ve adopted that as a mantra, I see something in somebody and kind of go, ‘Hey, you need to do this,’’’ says Mullings. “Because that’s what my mentors and sponsors did with me and I realized that in reality this is what mentorship and sponsorship looks like.”
Diversity of Thought
Mullings believes diversity is important and is not only about race.
“What happens is there’s a set of circumstances associated with what you’ve experienced as a Black person, as a woman and combined. I’ve had these sets of experiences that I bring to the table that no one else has. Diversity of thought brings new ways of doing things, new ways of thinking about things and different perspectives, which I think just creates a better result,” says Mullings.
Making A Positive Difference
Encouragement and support are what Mullings hopes members get from the Ubuntu circle. In fact, she hopes that in the future there will no longer be a need for Ubuntu or other similar affinity groups.
“My hope is that something like this would not be necessary — that we make ourselves obsolete because there’s just going to be so many of us working in this space that we organically find and connect with each other,” she says.
Until then, the program is well on its way.
“It’s really becoming a circle, there is no head and no person is more important than the other. Everyone’s view counts,” Mullings says.

]]>Launched in April 2020, MFS entered the market with a commitment to providing the best possible financing solutions coupled with exceptional service to Mazda dealers and customers. Created as a private label business by TMCC under an agreement to provide services to MNAO, Mazda Financial Services quickly established itself as a valued partner to Mazda dealers by offering a range of products to meet their wholesale and financing needs. Later in 2020, MFS continued to grow as Toyota Motor Insurance Services launched its comprehensive suite of vehicle and payment protection products under the name Mazda Protection Products (MPP). In the ensuing years, Mazda Financial Services enjoyed significant growth, supporting Mazda dealers and customers, and surpassing 1.6 million total finance and voluntary protection contracts booked.
MFS leaders attribute the business’s success to working closely with MNAO to provide solutions that enhance the customer and dealer experience. The company’s retail financing, leasing, and a comprehensive suite of vehicle and payment protection products are tailored specifically to meet the needs of Mazda customers and dealers while building loyalty to the brand. Now, with the contract renewal, the MFS team is redoubling their efforts to ensure Mazda’s success in the U.S. market.

We know that we only succeed when Mazda dealers and customers are pleased with our products and service, and we fully intend to continue innovating to serve them better every day.”

“MFS is an important part of our business, and we value MNAO’s trust in us to represent the Mazda brand, as well as deliver a top-tier experience to their customers and dealers. MFS’s positive impact on sales and customer loyalty has been recognized by Mazda dealers too. “The dealer network feels like MFS is the first true captive that we’ve had, and MFS has been a fantastic partner to our businesses,“ said Jimmy Scherer, former chairman of the Mazda National Dealer Advisory Council.

]]>The investment supports the previously announced future BEV assembly at Toyota Kentucky. It also adds a battery pack assembly line to the facility, with batteries being supplied by Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina.
“You cannot think of the Bluegrass region and Scott County without thinking of Toyota,” said Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear. “We are grateful that they continue to invest in our commonwealth and continue to set a standard for high-quality, well-paying jobs for our citizens. Thank you, Toyota for yet another $1 billion-plus investment coming to Kentucky.”
Toyota Kentucky has been a hub of the automaker’s North American operations since 1986. Its nearly 9,400 team members have assembled some of the most beloved nameplates in the Toyota lineup, including the Camry – America’s best-selling passenger car for 22 consecutive years.
“Today’s announcement reflects our commitment to vehicle electrification and further reinvesting in our U.S. operations,” said Kerry Creech, president of Toyota Kentucky. “Generations of our team members helped prepare for this opportunity, and we will continue leading the charge into the future by remaining true to who we are as a company and putting our people first for generations to come.”
Toyota is also committed to investing in its operational communities, primarily focusing on education and workforce development. Since making Kentucky home nearly four decades ago, more than $154 million in local donations continue to make sizeable impacts in the Bluegrass state. Our partnerships and support of 48 education and workforce training initiatives in 2023 alone has helped strengthen the foundation for our future.
“Every investment Toyota makes is proof of its commitment to employees,” said Chris Cohelia, group leader at Toyota Kentucky. “I joined this company 26 years ago as a production team member. Job stability, competitive pay and opportunities for growth are all reasons I love working here. It’s also exciting to be a part of the team building Toyota’s first battery electric vehicle in North America.”
Since 2021, Toyota has announced new investments totaling $17 billion into its U.S. manufacturing operations to support electrification efforts. Increasing BEV assembly in North America advances Toyota’s portfolio approach to electrification and commitment to building where we sell.
