Customer FAQs for Toyota RAV4 and Highlander Curtain Shield Airbag Sensor Recall

1.    Which models are involved in the recall?
Toyota is recalling approximately 214,000 2007 - 2008 model year Toyota RAV4 and approximately 94,000 2008 model year Highlander and Highlander HV vehicles sold in the U.S. No other vehicles are involved in this recall.

2.    What is the condition?
In the curtain shield airbag system, there are two sensors in the airbag sensor assembly which are designed to detect vehicle roll angle. If one of these sensors malfunctions, the airbag warning light will illuminate and the roll detection system will be suspended; however, the airbag remains available in the event of a side collision.

If both sensors fail nearly simultaneously after initial airbag system check, the curtain shield airbag and the seat belt pretensioner could be inadvertently activated.

3.    Are there any warnings that this condition has occurred?
Yes. The airbag warning light is designed to come on, during the ignition cycle check function, when the engine switch is turned to the “ON” position. It goes off after about six seconds. This means the system is operating as designed.

If the airbag warning light illuminates or remains illuminated after this period, please contact your local Toyota dealer for diagnosis and appropriate repair.

However, if both sensors fail nearly simultaneously after initial airbag system check, the seat belt pretensioner could be inadvertently activated and the MIL may not illuminate.

4.    What is Toyota going to do?
Toyota is currently preparing the parts that may be needed. Once the parts are ready, owners of the involved vehicles will receive a Safety Recall Notification by first class mail.

In the interim, owners of the involved vehicles will receive a notification letter advising them of this recall by first class mail in May 2011.

5.    Is the repair covered by warranty?  Will I have to pay any money out of pocket for this repair?
Toyota dealers will replace the roll sensing sensor assembly with a new one at no cost to the customer.

6.    What should an owner do if they experience the condition, or have immediate concerns about their vehicle?
If an owner has any immediate concerns, they are requested to contact their local dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.
