A Peek at 2009

We get lots of requests for information about upcoming vehicles, and mostly what we can say is this: "Sorry, we don’t discuss future products."

But this is one of those rare moments in time when we can tell you a few things about what’s coming for 2009. That’s because the product release date looms, thus secrecy soon won’t be an issue. So here goes:

Standard for Tundra in select region s is the capacity to use E85 Flex Fuel on 4x4 models powered by Toyota’s 5.7L V8 engine.

Additionally, two new option packages will be available for Tundra: TRD Sport and TRD Rock Warrior. Both offer unique wheels. TRD Sport gets color-keyed front and rear bumpers and Rock Warrior gets a color-keyed front bumper and a matte-black rear bumper. Rock Warrior also gets a special TRD-tuned off-road suspension.

Highlander raises the ante with a new option: a 2.7L four-cylinder engine on the two-wheel-drive base model. Available in January, the 187-hp four-cylinder beats the V6’s fuel efficiency, yet still keeps performance brisk.

4Runner gets a boost in its off-road prowess, thanks to an optional SR5 Trail Editio n package for the 4x4 V6 model. Equipment includes locking rear differential, Active Traction Control, Bilstein shock absorbers and 16-inch five-spoke aluminum alloy wheels with P265/70 R16 tires. Externally, the package adds a color-keyed grille and door handles, black tubular side step and tubular roof rack and three colors: Titanium Metallic, Natural White and Shadow Mica. Inside, the Trail Edition offers water-resistant seats with Charcoal fabric bolsters and a six-speaker AM/FM/CD audio system and detachable TomTom personal navigation device with WMA and MP3 compatibility, Bluetooth and satellite radio capability and iPod connectivity.

Tacoma gets four new exterior colors and updated audio systems, but the most notable change is the suite of safety features made standard. All Tacoma model s now include the STAR safety system, which includes an Anti-Lock Brake system, Brake Assist, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Vehicle Stability Control and Traction Control. Also joining the list of standard equipment are active headrests, rear side-curtain and front seat-mounted side airbags. A new limited-slip differential will help keep things moving in low-traction situations.

The 2009 RAV4 perks up with a new 179-hp 2.5L four-cylinder engine that produces more power than the engine it replaces and offers higher fuel efficiency. It also has a refreshed look, thanks to new a grille, tail lamps, seat fabric and other minor modifications. A new sport appearance package also is available on 4x4 V6 models. The package includes color-keyed power heated outside mirrors, stainless-steel exhaust tip, four run-flat tires and available exclusive exterior color: Elusive Blue Metallic. Even the rear door has been redesigned - without the RAV4’s door-mounted spare.

Over at Lexus, the IS 350/IS 250’s suspension and steering tuning have been adjusted for even better handling and control, and the IS now offers new shifting functionality, which allows the available paddle shifters to be used when the transmission is in "D" (drive) mode. The IS also gets new 17- and 18-inch wheels and side mirrors with turn signals incorporated. The Lexus Vehicle Dynamic Integrated Management system is now standard on the IS 250.

I am looking forward to Toyota offering a Diesel in the Tundra which would be capable of towing at least 18,000 lbs. There are more and more 5th wheel RV's on the road and I for one would prefer to tow the one I'm going to buy with a Tundra. I currently own 3 Toyota vehicles and I will certainly will be in the market in the near future for a Tundra Diesel. Thanks

The Tundra Diesel DRW - build a 4x4 crew cab with a long bed and offer aftermarket options to the public for this truck. Ford, Chevy and Dodge have been the fore runners too long , all make awesome trucks - but learn from them and build a truck that the public wants from you. Quality and longevity that is what is in your name and why people buy your trucks. So build that truck and I will be the first in a Florida dealership to trade my "06 Tundra DBL cab ( even though I have changed and modified it to a super tundra ) in for one without even looking at price.

+10000000 for diesel motor options. I love the Hilux and would gladly buy one if you would bring it to the US. I would love for there to be the same diesel motor options for all of your trucks and SUVs. The next vehicle I purchase will be a turbo diesel truck/SUV, and I would like to continue to buy Toyota products, but if there is no diesel option to replace my old 4Runner by 2011 I will look someplace else. I have written your company already and was told if there was enough consumer demand that Toyota would consider it- how many people have to write to you? How hard is it really to make that motor available in a 4Runner or Tacoma or FJ? If you build it they will come. Wake up.

As an US Army Reservist I have deployed to numerous countries where the diesel HILUX (tacoma) and SURF (4Runner) reign supreme. I have often driven both vehicles under lease when conditions were such that military vehicles would be too far from repair facilites to make them worth the effort of maintaining. The HILUX and SURF got amazing gas mileage on low quality fuel in harsh conditions and were easy to repair in even the remotest locations. As a 2001 Tacoma owner I love my truck, but the one thing I would like is a little better gas mileage. I have asked at dealerships and looked on the website concerning when the 'HILUX' will come to the states, or more likely when and if Toyota will finally adapt their diesel engine to the North American Tocoma body style. I know it can be done as I have also worked with some folks in Afghanistan who had Diesel quad cab 2002 Tacoma's bought as a direct order from Japan. I can only imagine that the diesel engine has not made its way to North America because the regular gas engine is still selling well. Maybe, eventually, enough consumers will demand the diesel engine and Toyota will here our cries. As with the rest of you I will keep my money until then and stick with my old truck.

Add another vote for a 4 cyl. diesel small van or pick-up from toyota. I have a 6 cyl. T-100 which I love, but it gets 17mpg. We can do better than that. Come on Toyota!
ddlp, October 22, 2009
Because Toyota refuses to offer diesels in the us, I recently purchased an older Diesel Landcruiser and paid as much as I would have for a new Tacoma. I'm getting near 30mpg on the highway in a full size SUV! This is the mileage that the Hybrid SUVs half the size are struggling to get! I love the truck and wouldn't consider a new Toyota unless they start offering some diesel options. The demand is more than there and I find it strange that Toyota doesn't see it.
nick, October 18, 2009
my friend just bought a hilux surf with a diesel engine. affordable decent truck, but to import a 92 hilux truck into canada costs upwards of 24 000. And people are willing to spend it. Obviously there is a demand for toyotas small diesel engines.
Aaron Rutledge, October 17, 2009
Wow. Get a clue Toyota. EVERY SINGLE COMMENT IS ASKING FOR DIESEL!!! What is the major malfunction. Have you not heard that the customer is always right? Tell us what we need to do. Do we need to be petitioning our government, is that the issue? Ever person commenting here wants a Toyota diesel in the US. Every single one. Do you think this is just some strange subset of the buying public? Not a single person has said how excited they are about your same old stuff here in the US. Oh boy, new colors! WHO CARES! What we want are FUEL OPTIONS. Get a clue Toyota or the slide from #1 will only continue and quicken.

After 20 years and 630,000 miles, I am again in the market for a new vehicle. The things I am looking for in a truck are reliability, mileage, 4 doors, 4 tires, and 4WD. Exhaustive research and careful consideration has led me to the Toyota Hilux with the 4-cyl. diesel engine.....only to find that it is not available in the U.S. I do hope that Toyota management sees fit to correct this oversight either by offering the Hilux in the U.S. or offering the Tacoma with a turbocharged diesel engine. Everyone I have spoken to on this subject wants this type of truck and to continue to deprive the largest consumer market in the world of its obvious benefits seems to me a very poor way to run a business. As I vote with my dollars, I'll either get what I want or I'll keep what I've got.
Ehren, September 18, 2009
I have wanted a Hilux since watching several episodes of Top Gear. I do own a 09 Tacoma and asked my dealer about it and he had no idea and had to look it up only to tell me "not possible". I like the Tacoma but commuting 80mi a day get expensive and the 19mpg no so great. Even after buying it I looked into other options. Please give us a diesel the US needs it.
Charris, September 06, 2009
I would buy a hilux in a heartbeat, and i just bought an 09 tacoma. Toyota needs clean diesels in the US!!! I love my tacoma, but the gas mileage is just not good enough for me
Mark LEvin, September 05, 2009
Please bring the 70-series diesels to the US, perhaps with a modern turbo diesel. The FJ is not suitable for true utility usage.
Cody Sergent, September 04, 2009
I am 19 and have always been interested in trucks. I must say, the Hilux is my favorite. If nothing else, Toyota should at least give the US the Hilux body style. Especially the body style seen in the movie 'District 9.' If that were an option, I'm sure they would be a great seller.
Les Campbell, September 01, 2009
@EJ_Garner in the Toyota USA Newsroom. Looking at the comments it seems that people want a diesel from Toyota way more than they want another new Prius. Have you ever driven a Prius? Its not fun and its slow. I would love to see a diesel hit the market in the US from Toyota. I have been to England and I know Toyota can make some of the best diesels for the price and still turn a profit. If you can ship Scions from Japan, then you can ship diesels from the UK.
Craig, August 22, 2009
My last two vehicles have been Chrysler Jeep Grand Cherokee's and both served me well to about 250K miles. I ready for a new vehicle and a small truck like the Tacoma would be good for me. I'm not buying now because I'm frustrated that four cylinder turbo diesels are not available to give the torque, life, reliability and MPG I would like to have. I now see Toyota already makes the vehicle I want, but don't offer it in the US. The Toyota HiLux offers two turbocharged diesel engine options. These vehicles get 30-35 mpg, can tow 5,000lbs., and will last 300,000+ miles. I vote with my dollars, and I'm not buying till this is available here. The technology works and is the natural next step for economy & performance in vehicles. Please bring this option to us in America. Electric may be in the longer term future, but a 10 MPG increase with diesel will help get us and me throught the next 10 years.
Hans, August 20, 2009
In search of a compact pickup to purchase within the next month I discovered this wonderful alternative called a Hilux. This vehical must be your Jack-of-Spades in the U.S.A. "Let's keep this on hold until we have to slam it down on the table, and say, ' Toyota Wins ! ' Are you kidding me ??? The game is about to be over with all the plug-ins on teh way..."Let's Roll" Toyota, play your hand...I'd buy it Tomorrow
Neil Lowry, August 18, 2009
I completely agree. I'm driving an imported 1991 Hilux surf with the 2LT-E, and i will continue to drive it until one of 2 things happens...it's dies, or Toyota releases a diesel in the Canadian/American market.
alex, August 09, 2009
i want tundra diesel crew max
Aaron Gardner, July 27, 2009
I am also one that would buy a compact diesel pickup if ANYONE would sell them in the US. In the meantime I will keep driving my ANCIENT landcruiser. Hear that Toyota, you are actually preventing me from spending any money. Why can't the car companies make something I would actually want......
Daniel, July 15, 2009
According to your own timeline: "With gasoline becoming more affordable, diesel models of the truck were discontinued in 1986, with the turbocharged gasoline model being discontinued in 1988. " Now is the time, I would buy a turbodiesel from Thailand if I could, offer them for limited availablity on the west coast & see what happens.
Ed Vanden Brand, July 15, 2009
Need a Tundra diesel truck (long box crew cab six speed standard) to replace my existing ford to pull my 5th wheel any chance that will happen in 2010?
Joe, July 04, 2009
I live in California and have been waiting for the new clean diesels to come out. Other companies are rolling them out. It is time for Toyota to sell their diesel Tacoma Hilux in the states. I would by one today if they were available.
GH, August 23, 2009
Toyota, I'll give you another year to bring the Land Cruiser Diesel to the US before I move on. Please do what it takes to make this happen so you will retain loyal customers.
John Shaw, August 16, 2009
I too would buy the Hi-Lux, I have often wondered why we are only offered expensive large deisel engines rather than the more economical 2.5 and 3.0 ltr engines. If I knew where to get one as a grey market import I would.
Dorri Harris, June 26, 2009
Please consider the Hilux here in the US. I am in Love with that truck. i would buy it today!
Chris T., June 25, 2009
I would like to buy a diesel Hilux or Tacoma. I love my Tacoma, but I hate gas engines. I am going to move to Central America and spend my money there rather than in the good ole USA because there I can buy a Diesel Hilux. Help stimulate the economy here in the USA, start selling high MPG diesels. Mahindra is selling 4 cyl diesels in Texas, Volkswagen is coming out with a Hybrid Diesel SUV crossover. Come on, I want a Toyota.
Brian, June 24, 2009
I know you won't comment, but I sure hope you listen. I am a Toyota fan currently on my 12th Toyota (currently have 3 in my garage) I have converted my parents who loved American cars to Toyota (Supra for mom, Tundra for dad). Granted I am not a share holder, but I am a financial supporter of sorts. It is time for Toyota to step up and acknowledge (publicly) the desire for diesels in the US by offering up some options. Some of us do not want hybrids; millions of us like to drive trucks without offering up 400 million in exec bonuses to Exxon with low fuel mileage. You need to remember back to the days when the "Big 3" ruled America with a steel box and a big V8. We (Americans) took them down by buying what Toyota, Nissan, and Honda had to offer because you listened to us. We diesel lovers may be a minority at the moment, but I am sure GM only had their backs turned for a moment in their eyes when it came crashing down. I will continue to buy Toyota's until someone does it better and listens a bit closer to my needs, or you listen quicker. I NEED a diesel! A better option over the JBL and some rear LCD headrests would be nice as well. I have the checkbook ready, build it and get Toyota #13 in my garage. Put a diesel in the Highlander and we'll make it 14. Love the products; just remember who got you here in the US. You say you build the cars we want, but I have never been asked anything. Town hall meeting in Denver CO, and I’ll be there. Can't make it? I will fly to the Texas plant if you hold one there instead, point is none of us know who you are talking to?
Ben, September 08, 2009
I am in agreement with Brian. I am on my 7th Toyota truck in 14 Years. My father has owned Toyota's since the early 70's. My parents currently have 3 Toyota trucks in there garage including a 1978 FJ40 totally restored that I want. So here is my problem. I live in the mountains of Colorado and I own a 2008 Tacoma with a V6 and manual 6-speed and it just doesn't have enough.......something. Gas mileage is about 2 mpg better than the 2005 DBL Cab Tundra V8 I sold last year. Are you kidding me?!? Also, when I trailer my snowmobile (1) on the light trailer I have, it is rather wimpy. Now, I love Toyota's and will buy more, most likely. However, something has to give here, better gas mileage and less loss of power at altitude. Diesel accomplishes both of these. I can't see buying a Tundra as I don't want a drive behemoth for my everyday vehicle, trying to drive in the grocery store parking lot, etc. If you only knew how many people drove all manner of Toyota's where I live and swear buy them and would most certainly buy any diesel model you offered. Are you listening? Oh and the blind spots on the new FJ, off-road vehicle?????? please, are awful! Hi-Lux diesel............
Taj, June 22, 2009
Ever since I found out about the Rav4 2.2 d4d & the hilux 3.0 d4d I've wanted one. The problem is they don't meet us saftey bs. They do meet emissions. If I could special order one I would even if it costs $37K. I looked into importing one from Italy but It would cost too much to get the saftey upto par. The final cost was around $47K. I wish toyota would get on the ball and market these two vehicles in the us. I need a new vehicle and I want one of these two. The Rav4 gets 37mpg city and 50+ highway who needs a prius hybrid when you can get that? The helix gets 30/40mpg really toyota.. Get with the program!!! I'd be happy with either one!!! Taj
Derek, June 21, 2009
When is the tundra diesel coming out? READY TO TRADE IN MY CHEVY!!!! ALSO ANOTHER HINT MAKE IT A LONG BED!!!! CREWMAX

Why toyota does not offer the tacoma in diesel in the usa
John V., June 18, 2009
I agree that I would be in line to get my hands on a 4 cylinder Tacoma or 4-Runner Diesel. I think that Toyota also needs to offer the 4 cylinder gas engine in the Tacoma and 4 Runner again. With such success with the 22R and 22RE motor it amazes me that a 4 cylinder motor is not offered. I understand that no future products can be revealed, but strongly consider what this post says and what a bunch of other posts say, AMERICA wants a 4 cylinder DIESEL ENGINE offered not only in Tacoma and 4-Runner, but in your cars and Tundra and Sequoia. If VW can make a Clean Diesel and Jeep can make a Diesel in their Cheorkee, there is no reason that Toyota cannot. I am a proud Toyota owner for the past 10 years and will be replacing my wife's SUV in the next couple of years. I can only hope by then, Toyota will come through and make something that the Customer wants and that America needs for the future. 1990 Toyota Truck, 22RE 1992 Toyota SR5, 3VZE 2008 Toyota Camry, 2.4 liter
Trey Brown, June 18, 2009
I agree with those of you wanting a diesel vehicle from Toyota. I have researched the new LandCruiser 70 and I would like to see them in the US. A diesel Acoma would be nice to. I'm not a big fan of the hybrid and would like to see the diesel become more dominant. I'm going to school to work on diesels so I know the potential they hold. Hope Toyota has some plan in the near future to bring these vehicles to the US
Mathew, June 18, 2009
I am a long time Toyota customer but will have to buy a GM product as Toyota does not have a fuel efficient 8 seater ( the sequoia is a gas guzzler ), the traverse/acadia and enclave are better on gas and cheaper to buy. Unless the Sequoia diesel is out by the July 4th weekend, GM is going to have another first time GM buyer.
Jamie, June 18, 2009
Agree with all above about the lack of Toyota diesels in US. Luckily VW is now offereing a full sized SUV with TDI engine. Maybe when my Tacoma dies Toyota will have caught up to other companies.
RockLn, June 16, 2009
I would not buy MB ML Bluetec if I had a chance to get a Toyota Diesel comparable vehicle. I just came from trip to Europe where I had noticed so many diesel variants. For the most part all vehicles are available with standard gearboxes, diesel engines and extended body frames as an option. Wheather it's Toyota Corolla, or Picnic, they all have station wagon variants (even used as taxis) Hey guys at Toyota, you want my business, get those diesel engines here to the States. Then watch how your sale numbers rise (unless you will be the last to jump on the diesel band wagon)
Trent, June 10, 2009
I'd like to see the diesel Tacoma here in the US. I see plenty of them in Australia and Africa, so why not here? I have no desire to buy a hybrid. I was interested in buying a Toyota for the first time, but apparently not. I'm sure a diesel would be quite popular here, especially in a small truck.
EJ Garner, Toyota USA Newsroom, June 12, 2009
No plans at this time to offer a Tacoma diesel. (toyota_newsroom@toyota.com)
Andy, June 10, 2009
As a shareholder I am concerned about the future of toyota. You seem to not care what the public wants anymore and have the mentality that "if we build it, they will buy it" We want a 4cyl diesel tacoma. The web bulletins are filled with postential customers waiting for such a vehicle.
Diesel Guy, June 07, 2009
I just dont understand why i cannot buy a Diesel car from Toyota in the USA?! Yes if I move to England I can by a new Landcruiser for $61k with a new diesel engine that get around 33 mpg combined. We have a Tundra and Landcruiser that I am about to buy a new SUV and sell the Landcrusier. Toyota wont be a option on this purchase due to I cannot buy a diesel product from them. With Diesel fuel costs dropping and other companies starting to sell diesel cars i will have options. Hey Toyota wake up and start shipping these allready developed products to the USA or you will loose more customers that want to go diesel!
EJ Garner, Toyota USA Newsroom, June 12, 2009
Thank you for you comments & feedback, however there are no plans at this time to offer a Tacoma diesel. (toyota_newsroom@toyota.com)
Shawn, April 26, 2009
Sequoia or Crewmax with E85???? forget it... MAKE IT A HYBRID! and why can't you obtain power from ALL 4 WHEELS? harnessing the power by the rotation (spinning) of the wheels NOT JUST THE BRAKING.. this can easily be done, so why not? MAKE IT HAPPEN TOYOTA! SEE YOU ON MY DRIVEWAY IN THE FUTURE!
Shawn, April 26, 2009
Any plans for a Hybrid Toyota Sequoia, i plan to purchase a full size vehicle this year, but might have no choice but to buy a GMC Acaida, since toyota does not make any vehicles with this passenger load of 8 seater that doesnt consume a load of gas. But if Toyota can make a Hybrid Sequoia, now they would be going somewhere! make it happen TOYOTA, if anyone can, TOYOTA CAN! btw Venza should have been made an 8 seater! and they need to make those back up camera displays bigger, if that product was targeted for older people, they should have thought about the display size of the backup camera screen display... ;) hope this helps...
Thaddeus Niebel, April 07, 2009
Please bring your 4cyl. diesel truck motor to the U.S.!!! I was recently in Mexico and drove your hilux truck and although I didn't like the body styling as much as my '90 pickup I was blown away by the gas mileage the hilux achieved. I currently drive a '90 pickup with a brand new 2.4L and I am lucky to get over 20MPG. I would buy a diesel Hilux or Tacoma in a heart beat if it was possible. I am sure many others share my opinion and would love to have toyota 4cyl. diesel in the US.
Mary, April 06, 2009
Will the Toyota Solara ever offer a hard top convertible option?
Sacha Terrill, April 07, 2009
Hi there. Thank you for your question and for visiting Our Point of View--hope you enjoyed the blog. I'd love to answer your question, however, Toyota does not comment on future products. Best regards, Sacha Terrill Social Media Coordinator Toyota Motor Sales, USA
