]]>TRD Pro Receives New Look with Boots to Match
With a striking new debut, 4Runner TRD Pro model will carry on the new color tradition with the introduction of Lunar Rock for 2021. Replacing Army Green in the TRD Pro color pallet, Lunar Rock will turn heads as customers enjoy all the on and off-road features offered in the lineup.
The TRD Pro badge on any Toyota truck or SUV signifies the brand’s most off-road-capable vehicles. Adding to the 4Runner TRD Pro makeover, the 2021 model brings in new black TRD alloy flow form wheels wrapped in Nitto Terra Grappler tires. Stronger and more rigid, these wheels have taken DNA cues from the current style to retain the family look while offering a more aggressive spoke design and deeper dish. The switch to flow form also allows for unique adjustments in other areas to increase ride handling and performance, specifically shock absorber tuning.
Completing the list of changes for 2021, the 4Runner TRD Pro includes re-tuned 2.5-inch Fox Internal Bypass Shocks to help complement its already off-road-capable hardware. Delivering the best of both worlds, this tuning provides an improvement in trail driving isolation and high-speed performance without compromising on-road comfort and steering response. The front Fox shocks are paired with TRD-tuned coil springs, yielding an inch of front lift for improved trail-tackling capability. Out back, the 2.5-inch Fox shocks also feature piggyback-style remote reservoirs to maintain damping performance in the most demanding off-road terrain. Overall, Toyota’s mantra of “Let’s Go Places” really comes to life with this enhanced TRD Pro model.
Being Seen in a New Light
Some might say the eyes are the window to the soul, and the 2021 4Runner’s purpose and position has never been clearer with the introduction of LED lights to the lineup. A first for the 4Runner lineup, all grades will now have LED headlamps as standard equipment. Limited, Nightshade and TRD Pro grades will also receive LED high beams. All grades will also have LED fog lights as standard equipment, with TRD Pro maintaining its current RIGID LED fog lamps in 2021.
2021 Trail Special Edition: Carry In, Carry Out…In Style
Toyota 4Runner buyers love the great outdoors, and in fact, sit at the top of their segments for participation in outdoor activities like camping, fishing, and hiking. To celebrate and support all that fresh-air fun, Toyota is introducing the 2021 4Runner Trail Special Edition. With an emphasis on extra storage, convenience and unique styling,
the 4Runner Trail will be based on the SR5 grade model and will be offered in either 2WD or 4WD. Available Trail color choices include Army Green, Cement, Midnight Black, and Super White.
All Trails feature black exterior badging, plus black seating with tan stitching. In all versions, standard all-weather floor liners help catch the outdoor elements that come in on occupants’ feet.
The 4Runner Trail comes ready to carry campers into the woods with dark gray TRD Off-Road wheels, a Yakima LoadWarrior rooftop cargo basket for added utility and gear-hauling capability. Inside, it boasts a custom 40-quart cooler and sliding cargo tray.
Custom-made for Toyota in the U.S., the 4Runner Trail’s cooler is quite a versatile piece of equipment, featuring:
The cooler comes standard in the color Cement for all 4Runner Trail Special Editions.

]]>February never gets any warmer here does it? Well it’s not only February, it’s also the first big show of the 2020 season, and I couldn’t be happier that we get to kick things off, right here in Chicago.
As I mentioned during the MAMA breakfast this morning, it’s always great to be in my stomping grounds in the Midwest. This area has made me who I am today.
I grew up here, went to DePaul University down the street and spent many years of my Toyota/Lexus career in this Region.
On the same note, Chicago might also be the death of me, thanks to my beloved Bears. Thank God for the Blackhawks and their success and their three recent Stanley Cups.
Needless to say, my passion for sports has led to some damaged TVs over the years. My wife calls it insanity, I call it fandom. Either way … I guess it could be worse.
For those of you from Detroit who follow the Lions or Redwings …I’m sorry.
In all seriousness, though, I’m also very passionate about this industry and of course Toyota.
Which is why I’m so excited to be up here today. We had a fantastic close to 2019 capping off our year with the start of sales for the 2020 Highlander.
And I’m excited to share that the all-new Highlander Hybrid started production in Indiana this week. You know the Highlander nameplate isn’t just hard-hitting, it’s a standout leader in Toyota’s lineup.
Almost think of it as the Dick Butkus or Brian Urlacher for our team.
But seriously, it’s at the top of a segment that is now over 24 models strong. And with that level of competition, we wanted to kick off this year with a bang. Which is why the 2020 Highlander was the hero of our Super Bowl ad on Sunday.
Let’s take a look.
—
Pretty good, right? The response to this all-new Highlander has been amazing. Customers are loving all of the features that it offers.
All-wheel or Front-wheel drive for every model? Check.
Hybrid Front-wheel drive a first in its segment? Check.
Hybrid with Best-in-class fuel economy and over 600 miles of range?
Check and Check. 600 miles – that’s enough to get from here to…well … any place that’s warm.
So even though Highlander has only been out for a month … we’re already taking it to the next level. I’m excited to reveal for the very first time the all-new 2021 Highlander XSE.
—
And there you have it. Pretty nice, huh? As you’ve seen over the past few years the XSE models such as Camry, Avalon, RAV4 and Corolla, bring dedicated styling and performance.
This Highlander XSE achieves just that, bringing a sleek exterior styling package that promises to turn heads.
Rocker panels, a sportier grille, blacked-out accents. Not something you’d expect on a Highlander, right?
Check out these new 20-inch wheels, exclusive to the XSE. Also, you’ll see twin-tip exhaust, a Highlander first.
Moving to the inside, this vibrant red interior immediately catches your attention. This is the boldest interior we’ve ever offered in a Highlander.
When looking at performance, the XSE has an all-new sport-tuned suspension and Dynamic Torque Vectoring on the all-wheel drive powertrain. It will be the best handling Highlander ever.
This Highlander XSE is the full package and now helps round out the complete portfolio. I’m happy to share that it will go on sale fall of this year.
Now, in case any of you missed our news from last night, we have three new Nightshade models.
You can see the 2021 Toyota Tacoma, Tundra and Sequoia Nightshade Editions right out here. Now offered on eight of our nameplates, Nightshade continues to drive enhanced styling across the Toyota portfolio.
Like the 4Runner Nightshade already in market, these additions carry premium features and will come equipped with black painted wheels, a darkened chrome grille, blacked-out exterior badging … and more.
Later this summer, our truck and Sequoia enthusiasts can now “Own the Night,” so to speak.
Of course … we want them to “own the day” as well.
You see, truck and SUV owners need versatility in the vehicles they drive. They want a commuter and a hauler – plenty of performance but also plenty of practicality for camping, hiking or even a simple weekend getaway.
So with these customers in mind we designed our new Trail Special Editions. Starting with the Tacoma, the first feature I’m sure you notice are the two lockable storage boxes in the bed. How cool is that? Perfect for storing tools, tie downs or fishing gear. Even better, the driver side is insulated, which makes for a perfect cooler on-the-go.
This feature is also available on the Tundra Trail Edition, which has the popular 1794 Edition grille.
All of the Trail Edition Models Feature black seating and unique tan stitching throughout the cab.
So, now that you know of some of the details, let’s see them in action.
—
Oh, you didn’t think I’d stand up here and talk about conquering the trail without 4Runner, did you? How awesome is that Yakima rack? Standard on the Trail edition.
Continuing the theme of extra storage, the 4Runner Trail comes with a custom cooler that secures easily to the standard sliding rear cargo tray. It’s removable and lockable making it the perfect companion for campsites or tailgates. And I don’t know if you noticed, but the color is the same as the exterior of the vehicle.
Speaking of color, all three Trail Editions will be available in Army Green, Cement, Midnight Black and Super White.
And I’m happy to say customers can start enjoying these new offerings late summer of this year.
As you can see, it’s a very exciting time for Toyota.
Overall, we could not be positioned better for a successful 2020. We’ve got the players, we’ve got the drive and we will work hard to welcome more people to the Toyota family.
These three new Trail Special Editions and Nightshade models along with the all-new Highlander XSE are sure to attract adventure seeking customers.
On behalf of Toyota, thank you for joining us today. Please enjoy your stay here in Chicago, try to get by Portillo’s for a hot dog and I wish you all safe travels getting home.
Please allow photographers a few moments to get some shots before you come on the stage.
Thanks and have a great day!

]]>The post 5 Ways the 2020 Toyota 4Runner Venture Special Edition Fuels Adventure appeared first on Toyota USA Newsroom.
]]>Learn how Toyota is fueling adventure with the 4Runner Venture Special Edition.
Leave Nothing Behind
Renowned explorers Lewis and Clark would be envious of the Venture Special Edition’s expansive storage capacity.
With the 4Runner Venture Special Edition, modern seekers can pack all their gear and more. Equipped with a roomy rear-sliding cargo deck — as well as the Yakima Megawarrior roof rack — there’s no need to pack light.
Ditch the Road
Pioneers often have no alternative but to take the road less traveled, which is usually not a road at all. In the Venture Special Edition, drivers can abandon the pavement with confidence.
Fitted with a four-link rear axle, along with coil-spring suspension, the Venture Special Edition is perfectly suited for off-road excursions. Additionally, the Venture Special Edition is equipped with CRAWL Control for regulating engine speed to enhance off-road handling – as well as Multi-Terrain Select for improved grip on any surface.
Stay Connected Off the Grid
Not all who wander are lost, especially if they’re driving the 2020 4Runner Venture Special Edition. Wherever the journey goes, the Venture Special Edition keeps explorers connected with a state-of-the-art multimedia system.
Drivers can navigate the wilderness with the Venture Special Edition’s 8-inch touch screen, giving them access to Android Auto — as well as countless other apps for entertainment, navigation and much more.
Don’t Just Play the Part — Look the Part
Whether it’s clothes or a vehicle, pioneers rarely indulge in the extravagant; they keep it simple. Hence, the Venture Special Edition’s pared-down approach to style.
With Gunmetal-colored TRD wheels coupled with all-black accents — including outer mirrors, door handles, badges and rear spoiler — drivers can express their intrepid spirits like true, bold pioneers.
Venture Safely
Adventure favors the prepared. Thanks to Toyota Safety Sense P, this SUV offers a high-tech safety system packed with features, such as the Pre-Collision system with Pedestrian Detection, automatic high beams and high-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control for all systems go!

]]>The post The Adventurer: Toyota 4Runner Gains New Safety and Multimedia Tech for 2020 appeared first on Toyota USA Newsroom.
]]>For 2020, the 4Runner makes Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) standard on all grades, making it an even more compelling choice for the adventurous family. This advanced suite of driver-assist technologies includes Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Sway Warning System, Automatic High Beams and High-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC).
With room for up to seven, the fifth-generation 4Runner is the most capable of its proud family tree, and it’s also the most accommodating and most comfortable. For 2020, all grades debut a new instrument panel design along with a high-resolution 8-inch touchscreen display for the Audio, Audio Plus and Premium Audio systems.
At the same time, the versatile multimedia systems get even more so with the addition of Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa compatibility. Now, you can easily navigate phone content or ask Siri®, Google or Alexa to recommend the best campsites, or to perhaps find a pizza place that delivers to the woods. Rear seat passengers, meanwhile, will appreciate the addition of two USB ports to charge their devices.
The 4Runner TRD Pro, which for 2019 gained its most off-road-capable suspension ever, shares in the above upgrades while also adding standard Smart Key with Push Button Start. The SR5 Premium and TRD Off-Road Premium grades also gain this convenience feature for 2020.
Only the 2020 4Runner TRD Pro, though, gets the new TRD-branded cat-back exhaust, which gives the 270-horsepower V6 engine a powerful-sounding growl. TRD Pro also gains updated HVAC controls borrowed from the Limited. A new Army Green exterior color that’s available only on 2020 Toyota TRD Pro models will bring out your inner drill sergeant. Magnetic Gray Metallic will also enter the fold as an option on TRD Pros, while Super White and Midnight Black Metallic colors will continue.
Those opting for the top-of-the line 4Runner Limited grade can once again choose the Nightshade Special Edition that debuted for 2019. Available in Midnight Black Metallic, Magnetic Gray Metallic or Blizzard Pearl, the Nightshade Special Edition gets its name from 20-inch black wheels, and extensive black exterior trim, including: rear bumper, grille accents, exterior mirrors and door handles, window moldings, rocker panels, door garnish, roof rails, badging, front moldings, and even the exhaust tailpipe tip.
Black interior trim features include the steering wheel, center cluster and console panels, shift knob and shifter panel, and inner door grips. (With the new-for-2020 8-inch multimedia systems, just ask Siri, Google or Alexa to play the Rolling Stones’ “Paint it Black.”)
Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa Compatibility
In addition to Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa compatibility, the 4Runner’s audio multimedia systems for 2020 are jam-packed with in-demand features. Starting with the SR5 and TRD Off-Road grades, these include:
The Premium Audio system in TRD Pro and Limited models builds further, adding Dynamic Navigation, six JBL speakers with subwoofer and amplifier, Dynamic Navigation with 3-year trial, Dynamic POI Search, Dynamic Voice Recognition, Remote Connect with 1-year trial, Wi-Fi Connect with up to 2 GB within 3-month trial, and Destination Assist with 1-year trial.
Go Where You Want to Go
Whether the destination is a secluded trailhead, local boat ramp, or traffic-clogged school drop-off zone, the 4Runner gets its crew there with comfort, versatility, and proven Toyota reliability. The 4Runner’s inherent strength originates with its tough-as-nails body-on-frame construction featuring a four-link rear axle and coil-spring suspension. The robust chassis is also the source of 4Runner’s comfortable ride quality.
4Runner offers the choice of 2WD, part-time 4WD with a 2-speed transfer case, or, in the Limited, full-time multi-mode 4WD with a 2-speed transfer case and locking center differential. All 4WD models offer a generous 9.6 inches of ground clearance, and all 4Runner models come with a full-size spare tire.
The 4Runner exudes a rugged look in all grades yet maintains a timeless SUV style all its own. For 2020, there are slight changes to the grill design, and every model features projector beam headlights and LED rear combination lamps. The SR5 and TRD models ride on 17-inch alloy wheels that are available in three designs: 6-spoke (SR5, SR5 Premium), 7-spoke (TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium) or a TRD alloy in matte black (TRD Pro). The TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium are distinguished by color-keyed bumpers and overfenders, hood scoop, and silver painted front and rear bumper accents. “TRD Off-Road” badges adorn the C-pillars.
The top-of-line Limited is the only 4Runner with chrome-plated exterior trim and grille insert, and 20-inch machine-finished wheels and P245/60R20 tires are exclusive to this model.
Guts and Glory
Whether blazing trails or navigating the concrete jungle, 4Runner is up to the task with a gutsy 270-horsepower 4.0-liter V6 engine. The powerplant’s 278 lb.-ft. of peak torque gives it plenty of get-up-and-go, and Dual Independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) optimizes torque across the engine’s operating range.
The smooth-shifting five-speed ECT-i automatic transmission includes a sequential shift mode for manually shifting when more control is needed, such as on inclines. That’s yet another factor that helps make the 4Runner an excellent tow vehicle, which is why all models include a standard integrated tow-hitch receiver and wiring harness. All 4Runner models can tow a maximum of 5,000 pounds, with a maximum 500-pound tongue weight.
The 4Runner 2WD models feature standard Automatic Limited Slip Differential (Auto LSD), a function of the traction control (TRAC) that allows some wheel slippage to help the vehicle dig out from sand or snow, for example. The available part-time 4WD system uses Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) and bolsters off-road capability with a two-speed transfer case with selectable low-range. By distributing drive force to any one wheel in contact with the ground, A-TRAC can help maintain traction when it senses wheel slippage occurring on terrain irregularities and slippery patches.
The full-time 4WD system that’s exclusive to the 4Runner Limited uses a Torsen center differential with locking feature and a three-mode, center console-mounted switch. The system employs a 40:60 torque split in most driving situations and alters that in response to slippage. In addition, if the front wheels are slipping while the vehicle is turning, the Torsen differential changes the split to 30:70, and if the rear wheels slip while the vehicle is turning, the split changes to 53:47.
Arsenal of Traction Technology
An array of technologies enhance the capability provided by the 4Runner’s high-strength chassis and 4WD. Standard Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC) provides additional control when accelerating from a stop on a steep incline by helping to hold the vehicle stationary for a short period of time while the driver transitions from the brake pedal to the accelerator.
Limited and SR5 models equipped with 4WD also feature standard Downhill Assist Control (DAC). This feature augments low-speed descending controllability by helping to maintain a constant slow speed and preventing wheel lockup, therefore allowing the driver to concentrate primarily on steering.
All 4Runner TRD models add the capability of an electronic-locking rear differential and Toyota’s Crawl Control (CRAWL) feature. The latter helps maintain a constant speed in slow-speed off-road situations, enhancing vehicle control when driving up, over or down obstacles. With the transfer case shifted into low range, CRAWL regulates engine speed and braking force to slowly move the vehicle forward or in reverse at one of the five driver-selectable low-speed settings. This allows the driver to focus on steering without having to also modulate the throttle or brake pedal in challenging terrain.
As trail conditions change, the driver of any TRD model can adapt the vehicle using the standard Multi-Terrain Select system simply by using a dial to choose a mode that matches prevailing surface conditions. The system will then adjust wheel slip control accordingly. For example, on loose terrain such as mud and sand, more-than-normal wheel slip is permitted, allowing wheel-spin to work in the vehicle’s favor. The Mogul setting is for any extremely uneven terrain, such as V-ditches, slopes, and ridges — uphill or down. In this mode, wheel slip is minimized and the system acts more like a limited slip differential. An overhead console groups the off-road control switches in one location.
Suspension Upgrades
The 4Runner TRD Off-Road models can be outfitted with Toyota’s Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS), which allows extended wheel travel at slow speeds for greater off-road capability and control. When driving on pavement, KDSS provides a nimble handling feel by reducing body lean when cornering.
The 4Runner Limited, while certainly off-road capable, places extra focus on everyday comfort and pavement handling. Its exclusive Cross Linked Relative Absorber System (X-REAS) suspension automatically adjusts the damping force of shock absorbers when driving over bumpy surfaces or when cornering. A center control absorber cross-links the shock absorbers on opposite corners of the vehicle, reducing pitch and yaw by offsetting opposing inputs.
TRD Pro Series: Off-Road is No Obstacle
The TRD Pro badge on any Toyota truck or SUV signifies the brand’s most off-road-capable vehicles. The 4Runner TRD Pro in 2019 added 2.5-inch Fox Internal Bypass Shocks to its roster of off-road-capable hardware. These shocks provide precise compression damping in both high-speed and low-speed situations, contributing to a plush, composed ride on the trail or highway.
The TRD Pro Series looks the tough-SUV part, too, with 17-inch black TRD alloy wheels wrapped in Nitto Terra Grappler tires, unique front grille, black bumper accents, TRD Shift Knob, and special badging and accents inside and out.
The TRD roof rack is exclusive to the 4Runner TRD Pro, which also features a standard moonroof and Premium Audio with JBL speakers with Clari-Fi (because it’s OK to be comfortable when you’re roughing it.) Like the other Toyota TRD Pro vehicles, the 4Runner TRD Pro features a 1/4-inch-thick aluminum front skid plate with red TRD lettering.
Space: An Expansive Universe
The Toyota 4Runner is a Sherpa among SUVs. With the second-row seats in use, the cargo area offers up to 47.2 cu. ft. of carrying space. If it’s just two people and their gear hitting the road or trail, folding the second row opens a cavernous 89.7 cu. ft. cargo area.
The second-row seats fold flat without having to remove the headrests. The available pull-out cargo deck can support up to 440 pounds to make loading and unloading heavy items easier, and it also provides seating for tailgating and campsite relaxation. For power on the go, the 4Runner offers a standard 120V outlet and two 12V outlets.
The 4Runner SR5 and Limited grades offer available third-row seating, with a split 50/50 seat that folds flat. When so equipped, the 40/20/40 second-row seat has a one-touch walk-in function to provide easy access to the third row. The seats can be folded from the side or at the rear, using separate one-touch levers. The second-row seats, which include a center armrest, individually recline up to 16 degrees in four steps.
Air conditioning with rear seat vents and pollen filter, a power-sliding liftgate window and backup camera are among the standard features that make the 4Runner SR5 an outstanding value. The new instrument panel adds a touch of high-tech for all grades, and the new 4.2-inch multi-information display provides readouts for things such as outside temperature, odometer, trip meters, and average fuel economy, but it also provides information on TSS-P features such as Lane Departure Alert and Dynamic Radar Cruiser Control.
The SR5 Premium and TRD Off-Road Premium provides a significant comfort upgrade with SofTex®-trimmed seats, heated front seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and the addition of the Smart Key system with Push Button Start. The Limited delivers a luxury experience with leather-trimmed, heated and ventilated 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat (with memory) and 4-way power adjustable front passenger seat, dual-zone automatic climate control and the Smart Key system with Push Button Start. The Limited also adds the convenience of a standard front and rear clearance sonar system.
Star Safety System
Along with the addition of TSS-P on all grades, 4Runner also comes standard with Toyota’s Star Safety System that includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with traction control (TRAC, or A-TRAC with 4WD), an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Smart Stop Technology (SST) brake-override system.
Eight standard airbags include driver and front passenger Advanced Airbag System, TAP (thorax, abdomen, pelvis) front seat-mounted side airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags and all-row Roll-Sensing Side Curtain Airbags (RSCA).
Limited Warranty and ToyotaCare
Toyota’s 36-month/36,000-mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover the powertrain for 60,000 miles and corrosion with no mileage limitation. 4Runner also comes standard with ToyotaCare, a complimentary plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance and 24-hour roadside assistance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first.

]]>For 2019, the 4Runner gains in both the looks and the capability departments thanks to two new offerings. The new Nightshade Special Edition will offer Limited buyers a sleek, sporty package accented with black features that include 20-inch black wheels, black bumper and grille accents, and black interior trim on the steering wheel, center cluster, console panels and shifter, just to name a few.
The 4Runner TRD Pro returns in 2019 with some significant changes, the most crucial being an all-new suspension package that includes 2.5-inch Fox Internal Bypass Shocks for impressive off-road performance that doesn’t sacrifice on-road handling. 4Runner TRD Pro also gains a TRD Roof Rack, standard JBL Premium Audio and moonroof, and an updated front skid plate with red TRD lettering.
Regardless of the grade or package, the 4Runner is as versatile as ever. It is a family-hauling, boat-towing, hill-climbing sport-utility SUV that can adapt to just about any situation. Oh yeah, and it offers room for up to seven passengers. Whether blazing trails or navigating the concrete jungle, 4Runner is up to the task.
Get Where You Need to Go
Regardless if the destination is a secluded trailhead, local boat ramp, or traffic-clogged school drop-off zone, the 4Runner delivers with everyday comfort, versatility, and proven Toyota reliability. 4Runner’s strength originates at its tough-as-nails body-on-frame construction featuring a 4-link rear axle and coil-spring suspension. But that tough chassis is also the source of 4Runner’s comfortable ride. You don’t sacrifice one to get the other.
The 4Runner offers the choice of 2WD, part-time 4WD with a 2-speed transfer case, or, in the Limited, full-time multi-mode 4WD with a 2-speed transfer case and locking center differential. All four-wheel-drive models offer a generous 9.6 inches of ground clearance. All 4Runner models come with a full-size spare tire.
The Toyota 4Runner can look ruggedly sinister covered in mud, but clean it up and it looks ready for a relaxing night out. All 4Runners are equipped with projector beam headlights and LED rear combination lamps. The SR5 and TRD models ride on 17-inch alloy wheels that are available in three designs: 6-spoke (SR5, SR5 Premium), 7-spoke (TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium), or a TRD alloy painted matte black (TRD Pro). The TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium are distinguished by their color-keyed bumpers and overfenders, hood scoop, and silver painted front and rear bumper accents. “TRD Off-Road” badges adorn the C-pillars.
The top-of-line Limited is the only 4Runner with a chrome-plated grille insert and exterior trim, and its 20-inch machine-finished wheels and P245/60R20 tires are exclusive to the model.
Black is the name of the game for the new Nightshade Special Edition. Based on the Limited grade, Nightshade offers premium black accents such as black front and rear bumper spoilers, outer mirror and door handles, window moldings, rockers panels, door garnish, roof rails, black badging, black chrome front moldings, and even a black exhaust tip. Black 20-inch wheels help complete the unique sporty exterior. Inside, black interior trim features include the steering wheel, center cluster and console panels, shift knob and shifter panel, and inner door grips. Nightshade is available in select colors: Midnight Black Metallic, Magnetic Gray Metallic and Blizzard Pearl.
It Has Guts
The 4Runner’s gutsy 270-horsepower 4.0-liter V6 routes its stout 278 lb.-ft. of torque through a 5-speed ECT-i automatic transmission with sequential shift mode. Dual Independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) optimizes torque across the engine’s entire operating range. There’s plenty of torque for towing, hence the inclusion of a standard integrated tow-hitch receiver and wiring harness on all grades. All 4Runner models can tow a maximum of 5,000 pounds, with a maximum 500-pound tongue weight.
The 2WD models feature a standard Automatic Limited Slip Differential (Auto LSD). This function of the traction control (TRAC) system allows some wheel slippage to help the vehicle dig out from sand or snow, for example.
Exclusive to the 4Runner Limited, the full-time 4WD system uses a Torsen® center differential with locking feature and a three-mode, center console-mounted switch. The system uses a 40:60 torque split in most driving situations and alters that in response to slippage. If the front wheels are slipping while the vehicle is turning, the Torsen® differential changes the split to 30:70. If the rear wheels slip while the vehicle is turning, the differential changes to a 53:47 split.
The Added Attraction of Added Traction
The 4Runner is fortified by a supporting array of technologies that enhance the capability provided by the high-strength chassis and 4WD. Standard Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC) provides additional control when accelerating from a stop on a steep incline by helping to hold the vehicle stationary for approximately 5 seconds while the driver transitions from the brake pedal to the accelerator. Limited and SR5 models equipped with 4WD also feature standard Downhill Assist Control (DAC). This feature augments low-speed descending controllability by helping to maintain a constant slow speed and prevent wheel lockup, allowing the driver to concentrate primarily on steering.
The 4Runner TRD Off-Road, Off-Road Premium, and TRD Pro models add the capability of an electronic-locking rear differential and Toyota’s Crawl Control (CRAWL) feature. The latter helps maintain a constant speed in slow-speed off-road situations, enhancing vehicle control when driving up, over or down obstacles. With the transfer case shifted into low range, CRAWL regulates engine speed and braking force to propel the vehicle forward or in reverse at one of the five driver-selectable low-speed settings. The driver can focus on steering without having to also modulate the throttle or brake pedal.
As conditions on the trail change, the 4Runner TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, and TRD Pro driver can adapt the vehicle with the Multi-Terrain Select system. A dial is used to select the mode that matches prevailing terrain and conditions, adjusting wheel slip accordingly. Suspension Upgrades
The 4Runner TRD Off-Road models can be outfitted with Toyota’s Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) that allows extended wheel travel at slow speeds for greater off-road capability and control. On pavement, KDSS provides a nimble sporty handling feel by reducing body lean when cornering.
The 4Runner Limited, though certainly off-road capable, places extra focus on everyday comfort and pavement handling with an exclusive Cross Linked Relative Absorber System (X-REAS) suspension, which automatically adjusts the damping force of shock absorbers when driving over bumpy surfaces or when cornering. A center control absorber cross-links the shock absorbers on opposite corners of the vehicle, reducing pitch and yaw by offsetting opposing inputs.
TRD Pro Series: Next-Level Off-Road
The TRD Pro takes 4Runner’s off-road performance to the next level with 2.5-inch Fox Internal Bypass Shocks. These shocks provide precise compression damping in both high-speed and low-speed situations, which ultimately means that whether on the trail or the highway these shocks will offer a plush, composed ride. The front Fox shocks are paired with TRD-tuned coil springs, and the combination provides an additional 1 inch of front lift for improved trail-tackling capability. Out back, 2.5-inch Fox shocks are employed but they also feature remote reservoirs to maintain damping performance in the most demanding off-road terrain.
The TRD Pro Series looks the tough part, too, with 17-inch black TRD alloy wheels wrapped in Nitto Terra Grapplers, unique front grille, black bumper accents, TRD Shift Knob, and special badging and accents inside and out. A new TRD roof rack is exclusively found on the TRD Pro, and it also receives a standard moonroof and JBL Premium Audio for 2019. Like the other TRD Pro vehicles, the 4Runner gets an updated 1/4-inch-thick aluminum skid plate with red TRD lettering. The TRD Pro Series will be offered in Super White, Midnight Black and the exclusive Voodoo Blue.
Space: Not a Compromise
The Toyota 4Runner is a Sherpa among SUVs. With the second-row seats in use, the cargo area offers up to 47.2 cu. ft. of carrying space. If it’s just two people hitting the road, folding the second row opens up a cavernous 89.7 cu. ft. cargo area. Fold-flat second-row seats provide a level load floor, and it’s not necessary to remove the headrests to fold the seats flat. The available pull-out cargo deck can carry up to 440 pounds to make loading and unloading heavy items easier, and it also provides seating for tailgating and campsite relaxation. For power on the go, the 4Runner offers a standard 120V outlet and two 12V outlets.
Third-row seating is available on SR5 and Limited grades, with a split 50/50 seat that folds flat. When so equipped, the 40/20/40 second-row seat has a one-touch walk-in function to provide easy access to the third row. The seats can be folded from the side or at the rear, using separate one-touch levers. Even when “roughing it” there’s no need to give up comfort; the second-row seats, which include a center armrest, individually recline up to 16 degrees in four steps.
Air conditioning with rear seat vents and pollen filter, power-sliding liftgate window, and a backup camera are among the standard features that make the 4Runner SR5 an outstanding value. The standard Optitron® instrument panel adds a touch of high-tech elegance for all grades, and a multi-information display provides readouts for numerous vehicle functions and fuel economy.
The SR5 Premium provides a significant comfort upgrade with SofTex®-trimmed seats, heated front seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and more. The Off-Road Premium receives the same features, and the Limited gets an added dose of refinement with leather-trimmed heated and ventilated 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat (with memory) and 4-way power adjustable front passenger seat, dual-zone automatic climate control and the Smart Key system with push button start. The Limited also adds the convenience of a standard front and rear clearance sonar system.

]]>Lights Out: 4Runner Nightshade
The 4Runner Nightshade Special Edition adds mystique to the Limited grade on which it’s based with stylish upgrades that make it unique among its peers. Black accents are added to give Nightshade its own vibe: front and rear bumper spoilers, outer mirrors and door handles, window moldings, rocker panels, door garnish, roof rails and badging.
Up front, black chrome moldings are fitted on the grille slots and, in back, the exhaust tip gets the black treatment as well. Black 20-inch wheels help complete the sleek exterior. Inside, black interior trim features include the steering wheel, center cluster and console panels, shift knob and shifter panel, and inner door grips. The 4Runner Nightshade Special Edition is available in Limited 4×2 or 4×4 models and carries a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $1,740 in addition to the base vehicle MSRP. It is available at dealerships now in select colors: Midnight Black Metallic, Magnetic Gray Metallic and Blizzard Pearl.
Tundra SX is Clean Supreme
First and foremost, Tundra owners pride themselves on being just as tough as their trucks, but there’s no question that personalization is a very close second place. Available on the SR5 grade Double Cab in 4×2 or 4×4 and powered by the 5.7-liter i-FORCE V8 engine, the SX Package provides a lustrous combo that’s clean, fresh, and of course, tough.
Relying on a selection of color-keyed accents and blacked-out wheels, SX combines thoughtful upgrades to create what may be the cleanest Tundra to date. The exterior of the truck is streamlined with the removal of all exterior badging. Next, color-keyed front grille surrounds, front bumper end caps and a rear bumper are added for a uniform appearance. Front bucket seats are upgraded for added comfort, and 18-inch black alloy wheels add a nice finishing touch.
The Tundra SX Package is available in dealerships now with an MSRP of $1,630 on SR5 Tundra grades. It is available in colors Super White, Midnight Black Metallic, and Barcelona Red Metallic.
Tacoma SX: Back with Black
For 2019, the Tacoma is offered in an impressive 32 different versions, and the new SX Package only adds to that variety with a black-out theme that doesn’t come with a hefty price tag.
The SX Package is based on the Tacoma SR grade and is available on 4x2s and 4x4s on Access Cab models. The SX gets black-out treatment on high-visibility parts such as the badging, overfenders, mirror caps, grille, door handles and headlamps. It also gets the addition of 16-inch matte black alloy wheels.
The SX Package offers cool customization but keeps things within budget at an MSRP of $560. It is available on six different colors that include Super White, Silver Metallic, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Midnight Black Metallic, Barcelona Red Metallic and Quicksand.

]]>The post Cambio radical: los Toyota TRD Pros de 2019 ejemplifican el rendimiento supremo a campo traviesa appeared first on Toyota USA Newsroom.
¿Quiere ir a muchos lugares?
Tundra TRD Pro: nuevas adiciones presuntuosas
]]>It’s Got Guts
The available part-time 4WD system uses Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) and bolsters off-road capability with a two-speed transfer case with selectable low-range. By distributing drive force to any one wheel in contact with the ground, A-TRAC can help make terrain irregularities and slippery patches virtually transparent to the driver.
Exclusive to the 4Runner Limited, the full-time 4WD system uses a Torsen center differential with locking feature and a three-mode, center console-mounted switch. The system uses a 40:60 torque split in most driving situations and alters that in response to slippage. If the front wheels are slipping while the vehicle is turning, the Torsen differential changes the split to 30:70.
On 4Runner TRD Off-Road models, an overhead console groups the off-road control switches into one location.
TRD Pro Series: Built to be Ready
Taking the 4Runner’s suspension setup a step further is the TRD Pro Series that comes ready to hit the trail with unique TRD-tuned front springs, TRD Bilstein high-performance shocks with rear remote reservoirs, Nitto Terra Grappler tires, and a TRD front skid plate.
The TRD Pro Series looks the tough part, too, with 17-inch black TRD alloy wheels, unique front grille, black bumper accents, TRD Shift Knob, and special badges. The TRD Pro Series colors for 2018 are Super White, Midnight Black and the exclusive Cavalry Blue.
Room for Adventure
The Toyota 4Runner is a Sherpa among SUVs. With the second-row seats in use, the cargo area offers up to 47.2 cu. ft. of carrying space. If it’s just two people hitting the road or trail for an extended getaway, folding the second row opens up a cavernous 89.7 cu. ft.
The standard Optitron instrument panel adds a touch of high-tech elegance for all grades, and a multi-information display provides readouts for numerous vehicle functions and fuel economy.
The SR5 Premium provides a significant comfort upgrade with SofTex-trimmed seats, heated front seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and more.
Standard Entune Multimedia
Like all 2018 Toyota models, the 4Runner line offers an array of Entune Multimedia system choices:
Entune App Suite is a collection of popular mobile apps and data services. Once a smart phone is connected to the vehicle using Bluetooth or a USB cable, Entune’s features are operated using the vehicle’s controls or, for some services, by voice recognition. Entune offers mobile apps for iHeartRadio, MovieTickets.com, OpenTable, Pandora and others. Entune data services include a fuel price guide, sports scores, stocks, traffic and weather.
Star Safety System and Safety Connect
The 4Runner features Toyota’s standard Star Safety System that includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with traction control (TRAC, or A-TRAC with 4WD), an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Smart Stop Technology (SST) brake-override system.
Eight standard airbags include driver and front passenger Advanced Airbag System, TAP (thorax, abdomen, pelvis) front seat-mounted side airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags and all-row Roll-sensing Side Curtain Airbags (RSCA). The Safety Connect system available for the 4Runner Limited (one-year trial subscription included) offers Automatic Collision Notification, Stolen Vehicle Location, Emergency Assistance Button (SOS), and Roadside Assistance.
The 4Runner also comes standard with ToyotaCare, a complimentary plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance and 24-hour roadside assistance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first.

]]>For 2017, the 4Runner’s endearing character and impressive ruggedness is massaged by the passionate team at Toyota Racing Development (TRD). Last year’s Trail and Trail Premium grades are now known as the TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium, and join the ultimate off-roader in the lineup, the 4Runner TRD Pro.
In addition to the a short list of exterior updates that include new badging and color options, within their cabins, the trio of TRD models feature a carbon fiber-patterned center console, with the TRD Off-Road grades getting unique “TRD Off-Road” floor mats. The TRD Off-Road Premium and TRD Pro add red “TRD” logos to their front seats’ headrests. Drivers of all TRD models have the full gamut of Toyota’s off-road driving technologies at their disposal.
“Strong, Like Bull”
Whether the destination is a tree-lined trailhead, local boat launch, or hectic school entrance, the 4Runner delivers with everyday comfort, versatility, and proven Toyota reliability. The 4Runner’s strength originates at its tough-as-nails body-on-frame construction featuring a 4-link rear axle and coil-spring suspension. The 4Runner offers the choice of 2WD, part-time 4WD with a 2-speed transfer case, or full-time multi-mode 4WD with a 2-speed transfer case and locking center differential. All four-wheel drive models offer 9.6 inches of ground clearance.
In addition to the three TRD models, the 2017 4Runner is available as the popular, well-equipped SR5; the SR5 Premium with additional amenities; and the luxurious Limited.
Looking Good, Clean or Dirty
Blending style and ruggedness is difficult, but not impossible, as exemplified by the 4Runner. Caked in mud or freshly bathed, the 4Runner never fails to look stunning. All wheels are wrapped in tires sized P265/70R17.
The TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium are distinguished by their color-keyed bumpers and overfenders, hood scoop, and silver painted front and rear bumper accents. “TRD Off-Road” badges adorn the exterior of their C-pillars.
The top-of-line Limited is the only 4Runner with a chrome-plated grille insert and exterior trim; its 20-inch machine-finished wheels and P245/60R20 tires are exclusive to the model. All 4Runner models come with a full-size spare tire.
Engineered to Take What You Dish Out
All 4Runners are powered by a gutsy 270-horsepower 4.0-liter V6 that routes its power through a 5-speed ECT-i automatic transmission with sequential shift mode. The V6 delivers a stout 278 lb.-ft. of torque. Dual Independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) optimizes torque across the engine’s entire operating range. There’s plenty of torque for towing, hence the inclusion of a standard integrated tow-hitch receiver and wiring harness on all grades. The 4Runner can tow a maximum of 5,000 pounds, with a maximum 500-pound tongue weight.
The renowned 4Runner lineup starts at the SR5 2WD model, which offers a standard Automatic Limited Slip Differential (Auto LSD). This function of the traction control (TRAC) system allows some wheel slippage to help the vehicle dig out from sand or snow, for example.
The available part-time 4WD system uses Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) and bolsters off-road capability with a two-speed transfer case with selectable low-range. By distributing drive force to any one wheel in contact with the ground, A-TRAC can make terrain irregularities and slippery patches virtually transparent to the driver.
High Tech Traction Assistants
The 4Runner’s high-strength chassis and 4WD get help from a supporting cast of technologies. Standard Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) provides additional control when accelerating from a stop on a steep incline by helping to hold the vehicle stationary while the driver transitions from the brake pedal to the accelerator. Limited and SR5 models equipped with 4WD also feature standard Downhill Assist Control (DAC). This feature augments low-speed descending controllability by helping to maintain a constant slow speed and preventing wheel lockup, allowing the driver to concentrate primarily on steering.
The 4Runner TRD Off-Road, Off-Road Premium, and TRD Pro models add the capability of an electronic-locking rear differential and Toyota’s Crawl Control (CRAWL) feature. The latter helps maintain a constant speed, enhancing vehicle control when driving up and over obstacles in challenging off-road situations. With the transfer case shifted into low range, CRAWL regulates engine speed and braking force to propel the vehicle forward or in reverse at one of the five driver-selectable low-speed settings. The driver can focus on steering over obstacles without having to also modulate the throttle or brake pedal.
On 4Runner TRD Off-Road models, an overhead console groups the off-road control switches into one location.
Suspension Upgrades: No Leg Days Skipped
The 4Runner TRD Off-Road models can be outfitted with Toyota’s Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) that allows extended wheel travel at slow speeds for greater off-road capability and stability. On pavement, KDSS provides a nimble sporty handling feel by reducing body lean when cornering.
The 4Runner Limited, though certainly off-road capable, places extra focus on everyday comfort and pavement handling with an exclusive X-REAS suspension, which automatically adjusts the damping force of shock absorbers when driving over bumpy surfaces or when cornering. A center control absorber cross-links the shock absorbers on opposite corners of the vehicle, substantially reducing pitch and yaw by offsetting opposing inputs.
TRD Pro Series: Built Ready
Taking the 4Runner’s suspension setup a step further is the TRD Pro Series that comes ready to hit the trail with unique TRD-tuned front springs, TRD Bilstein high-performance shocks with rear remote reservoirs, Nitto® Terra Grappler tires, and a TRD front skid plate.
The TRD Pro Series looks the tough part, too, with 17-inch black TRD alloy wheels, unique front grille, black bumper accents, TRD Shift Knob, and special badges. The TRD Pro Series is available in new colors for 2017: Cement, Barcelona Red, and Super White.
Room for Adventure
The Toyota 4Runner is the Sherpa of SUVs. With the second-row seats in use, the cargo area offers up to 47.2 cu. ft. of carrying space. If it’s just two people hitting the road or trail for an extended getaway, folding the second row opens up a cavernous 89.7 cu. ft.
The SR5 Premium provides a significant comfort upgrade with SofTex®-trimmed seats, heated front seats, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and more. The Off-Road Premium receives the same features, and the Limited gets luxurious with leather-trimmed heated and ventilated 8-way power driver’s seat (with memory) and 4-way power front passenger seat, dual-zone automatic climate control and the Smart Key system with push button start. The Limited also adds the convenience of a standard front and rear clearance sonar system.
Standard EntuneTM Multimedia
Like all 2017 Toyota models, the 4Runner line offers an array of EntuneTM Multimedia system choices:
EntuneTM App Suite is a collection of popular mobile apps and data services. Once a smart phone is connected to the vehicle using Bluetooth® or a USB cable, EntuneTM’s features are operated using the vehicle’s controls or, for some services, by voice recognition. Entune offers mobile apps for iHeartRadio, MovieTickets.com, OpenTable®, Pandora® and others. Entune data services include a fuel price guide, sports scores, stocks, traffic and weather.
Star Safety System and Safety Connect
The 4Runner features Toyota’s standard Star Safety System™ that includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with traction control (TRAC, or A-TRAC with 4WD), an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Smart Stop Technology (SST) brake-override system.
Eight standard airbags include driver and front passenger Advanced Airbag System, TAP (thorax, abdomen, pelvis) front seat-mounted side airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags and all-row Roll-sensing Side Curtain Airbags (RSCA). The Safety Connect™ system available for the 4Runner Limited (one-year trial subscription included) offers Automatic Collision Notification, Stolen Vehicle Location, Emergency Assistance Button (SOS), and Roadside Assistance.
Limited Warranty and Toyota Care
Toyota’s 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover the powertrain for 60,000 miles and corrosion with no mileage limitation. The 4Runner also comes standard with Toyota Care, a complimentary plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance and 24-hour roadside assistance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first.

]]>Since its introduction in 1984, the 4Runner’s body-on-frame architecture has enabled the SUV to traverse challenging terrain while comfortably transporting people and all the gear they need for their adventures.
For four decades, TRD has been racing off-road and that heritage is reflected in these new grades. The exterior of the TRD Off-Road 4Runner features black painted wheels and a unique TRD Off-Road badge on the C-pillar. Inside, a TRD Shift Knob sits below the center console that has a carbon fiber look, while the floor mats feature the TRD Off-Road designation. The TRD Off-Road Premium 4Runner also adds “TRD” red lettering on the headrests for the driver and front passenger.
Under the rugged exterior of the Off-Road and Off-Road Premium grades, advanced capability is built into the 4Runner, including the Multi-Terrain Select system which allows the driver to use a dial to select the mode that matches prevailing terrain and conditions, adjusting wheel slip accordingly. The 4Runner lives up to its name with an electronic-locking rear differential and Toyota’s Crawl Control (CRAWL) feature. “The 4Runner has a large and loyal following, with dependability being a key factor. Of all the 4Runners purchased in the last ten years, 90 percent are still on the road,” said John Myers, national manager, trucks and SUVs, Toyota Vehicle Marketing and Communications. “4Runner owners often take their SUVs off the beaten path, so these new TRD Off-Road grades will be a popular recognition of TRD’s history in the off-road arena.”
The 2017 4Runner will be available in six grades: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, and TRD Pro. Pricing for all grades will be available prior to the 4Runner’s launch later this year.

]]>The post Tonka 4Runner is the Big Toy Story at Toyota’s SEMA Display appeared first on Toyota USA Newsroom.
]]>TORRANCE, Calif., Nov. 3, 2015—Putting the “Toy” in Toyota—with a capital T—is the purpose of the Tonka 4Runner concept vehicle, which will be on display at Toyota’s 2015 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show booth.
Toyota teamed with Funrise Toy Corporation, manufacturer of Tonka toys for Hasbro, to build a life-size Tonka SUV whose theme is “the ultimate off-road adventure.” The Tonka 4Runner joins the Tonka Tundra fire truck as the latest collaboration between the two iconic brands.
The Tonka 4Runner is powered by the same 4.0-liter V6 as the production 4Runner—but that’s about the only similarity between the two. The concept vehicle’s body—elevated to new heights by a ten-inch Bulletproof Suspension lift kit—sports bold matte black and yellow Tonka graphics. Twenty-inch Ultra Motorsports Type 250 Colossus wheels are enveloped by Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ 38×15.50R20LT off-road tires. Over each tire are Rigid Industries LED lights, so that the vehicle is as impossible to miss at night as it is in broad daylight.
The custom suspension includes King 8×2.5-inch and 10×2.5-inch coilovers, as well as an assortment of Bulletproof Suspension components. Bulletproof also designed the vehicle’s welded bumpers, roof rack, side steps and ladders.
The crowning touch, literally, is the pop-up tent on the Tonka 4Runner’s roof, which makes the SUV the ultimate dream machine for outdoor enthusiasts.
The Tonka 4Runner can be seen November 3-6, 2015, in the Toyota display booth (#24700) located in the Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center at the 2015 SEMA Show.

]]>The post Toyota 4Runner: The go-to-SUV for Go-Anywhere Capability for up to Seven appeared first on Toyota USA Newsroom.
]]>Whether the destination is a difficult-to-reach bike trail, a hidden access point for river rafting or simply a spectacular view, the Toyota 4Runner has been getting owners there for 30+ years. The current-generation model is the roomiest and most capable in its history and sacrifices none of its rugged function to deliver everyday comfort and versatility. The 4Runner really is the do-it-all SUV. Available third-row seats allow up to seven-passengers to experience great outdoor adventures.
For 2016, the 4Runner does it all again, this year while treating occupants to more functionality from upgraded Entune multimedia systems. In the SR5 and Trail models, the Entune Audio Plus with Connected Navigation (Scout® GPS Link) uses the customer’s smartphone to provide navigation functionality through the head unit. All Entune units are upgraded to 2.5 version status, which includes Siri® Eyes Free mode.
The SR5 Premium and Trail Premium grades feature standard Entune Premium Audio with Integrated Navigation and App Suite, and the Limited gets Entune Premium JBL Audio with Integrated Navigation and App Suite.
Building a Leader
Toyota pioneered the crossover SUV and today offers two of the best — and best-selling — the compact RAV4 and midsize Highlander. That makes room for a full-capability SUV in the line, and the 4Runner excels in that role. It’s built with rugged body-on-frame construction featuring a 4-link rear axle and coil-spring suspension.
The 4Runner offers the choice of 2WD, part-time 4WD with a 2-speed transfer case or full-time multi-mode 4WD with a 2-speed transfer case and locking center differential. In all cases, a 4.0-liter, 270-horsepower V6 teamed to a 5-speed ECT-i automatic transmission provides powerful motivation.
A wide choice of model grades appeal to a wide range of budgets and needs. The 4Runner is available as a well equipped SR5; SR5 Premium with additional amenities; Trail; Trail Premium; Limited, and, for the ultimate in off-road capability and style, the unique TRD Pro Series.
TRD Pro Series: Ready to Get Dirty
The TRD Pro Series comes ready to hit the trail with TRD front springs, TRD Bilstein high-performance shocks with rear remote reservoirs, Nitto Terra Grappler tires and a TRD front skid plate. The TRD Pro Series looks the tough part, too, with 17-inch black TRD alloy wheels, unique front grille, black bumper accents and special badges. In addition to black or white, the TRD Pro Series is available in a new exclusive color for 2016, Quicksand, which replaces Inferno.
Rugged Styling, and the Hardware to Back It Up
Rugged looks alone won’t get you down the trail, but they’re sure a nice bonus. All 4Runners come equipped with projector beam headlights and LED rear combination lamps. The SR5, Trail and TRD Pro ride on 17-inch alloy wheels and, all 4Runner models come with a full-size spare tire. The Trail model takes muscular design to a higher plateau with color-keyed bumpers and overfenders, aggressive looking hood scoop and silver painted front and rear bumper accents.
On any Toyota, the Limited grade stands apart with upscale trim, and that’s also the case for the 4Runner. It’s the only 4Runner with a chrome-plated grille insert, and its chrome front bumper trim extends to the foglamp bezels. The side molding and rear bumper are also chrome trimmed. The 20-inch machine-finished wheels are another Limited-exclusive feature.
Engineered to Take What You Can Dish Out
The 4Runner’s 4.0-liter V6 cranks out 270 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 278 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,400 rpm, so it’ll move this roomy SUV with authority. Dual Independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) optimizes torque across the engine’s operating range. There’s plenty of grunt for towing, and Toyota makes the task easier by equipping the 4Runner with a standard integrated tow-hitch receiver and wiring harness. The 4Runner can tow a trailer up to 5,000 pounds, with a 470-pound tongue weight.
The 4Runner SR5 2WD will do the job for many customers thanks to an Automatic Limited Slip Differential (Auto LSD) feature, a function of the traction control (TRAC) that allows some degree of wheel slippage to help the vehicle dig out from sand or snow, for example. The available part-time 4WD system uses Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) and bolsters off-road capability with a two-speed transfer case with low-range. By distributing drive force to any one wheel in contact with the ground, A-TRAC can make terrain irregularities and slippery patches virtually transparent to the driver.
The 4Runner Limited 4×4 is equipped with a full-time 4WD system using a TORSEN center differential with locking feature and a three-mode, center console-mounted switch. The system uses a 40:60 torque split in most driving and alters that in response to slippage. If the front wheels are slipping while the vehicle is turning, the TORSEN differential changes the split to 30:70. If the rear wheels are slipping while the vehicle is turning, the differential changes to a 53:47 split.
High Tech Helpers
The tough chassis and 4WD get help from a full supporting cast of technologies. Standard Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) provides additional control when accelerating from a stop up a steep incline by helping to hold the vehicle stationary while the driver transitions from the brake pedal to the accelerator. Limited and SR5 models equipped with 4WD also feature standard Downhill Assist Control (DAC). This feature augments low-speed descending controllability by helping to maintain a constant slow speed and preventing wheel lockup, allowing the driver to concentrate primarily on steering.
The 4Runner Trail grade (and TRD Pro) lives up to its name by adding the capability of an electronic-locking rear differential and Toyota’s Crawl Control (CRAWL) feature. The latter helps maintain a constant speed, enhancing vehicle control when driving up and over obstacles in challenging off-road situations. With the transfer case shifted into low range, CRAWL regulates both engine speed and braking force to propel the vehicle forward or in reverse at one of the five driver-selectable low-speed settings. The driver can thus focus on steering over obstacles without having to also modulate the throttle or brake pedal.
As conditions on the trail change, the 4Runner Trail grade driver can adapt the vehicle with the Multi-Terrain Select system. A dial is used to select the mode that matches prevailing terrain and conditions, adjusting wheel slip accordingly. On the 4Runner Trail, an overhead console groups the off-road control switches into one location.
Suspension Upgrades
The 4Runner Trail and TRD Pro Series models offer further off-road credentials, including superior approach and departure angles, high ground clearance and available suspension upgrades. The available Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) in the 4Runner Trail facilitates extended wheel travel at slow speeds for greater off-road capability and stability. On pavement, KDSS provides a nimble sporty handling feel by reducing body lean when cornering.
The Limited adds comfort through the standard and exclusive X-REAS suspension, which automatically adjusts the damping force of shocks when driving over bumpy surfaces or when cornering. A center control absorber cross-links the shock absorbers on opposite corners of the vehicle, substantially reducing pitch and yaw by offsetting opposing inputs.
Room for Adventure
The Toyota 4Runner is the Sherpa of SUVs. With the second-row seats in use, the cargo area offers up to 47.2 cu. ft. of carrying space. If it’s just two people hitting the road or trail for an extended getaway, folding the second row opens up a cavernous 89.7 cu. ft.
The SR5 Premium provides a significant comfort upgrade with SofTex-trimmed seats, heated front seats, power moonroof, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and more. The Trail Premium receives the same features, and the Limited gets luxurious with leather-trimmed heated and ventilated 8-way power driver’s seat (with memory) and 4-way power front passenger seat, dual-zone automatic climate control and the Smart Key system with push button start. The Limited also adds the convenience of a standard front and rear clearance sonar system.
Standard Entune® Multimedia
The SR5 and Trail grade models feature Entune Audio Plus, which includes an AM/FM/MP3 CD player with eight speakers, integrated SiriusXM® All-Access Satellite Radio (with 3-month trial subscription), a USB port with iPod® connectivity, and Bluetooth® hands-free phone capability and music streaming. The Limited Grade’s Entune Premium JBL® Audio system incorporates a JBL® premium sound system with 15 speakers, plus navigation with a seven-inch display, SiriusXM All-Access Satellite Radio (with 3-month trial subscription), HD Radio and iTunes® tagging.
Entune is a collection of popular mobile apps and data services. Once a smart phone is connected to the vehicle using Bluetooth® or a USB cable, Entune’s features are operated using the vehicle’s controls or, for some services, by voice recognition. Entune offers mobile apps for iHeartRadio, MovieTickets.com, OpenTable®, and Pandora® and others. Entune data services include a fuel price guide, sports scores, stocks, traffic and weather.
Star Safety System and Safety Connect
The 4Runner features Toyota’s standard Star Safety System that includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with traction control (TRAC, or A-TRAC with 4WD), an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Smart Stop Technology (SST) brake-override system.
Eight standard airbags include front, seat-mounted side airbags, knee airbags for the driver and front passenger, and side-curtain airbags for the second and third rows (when so equipped). The Safety Connect system available for the 4Runner Limited (one-year trial subscription included) offers Automatic Collision Notification, Stolen Vehicle Location, Emergency Assistance Button (SOS), and Roadside Assistance.
Limited Warranty and Toyota Care
Toyota’s 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover powertrain for 60,000 miles and corrosion with no mileage limitation. The 4Runner will also come standard with Toyota Care, a complimentary plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance and 24-hour roadside assistance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first.
