Osamu Goto serves as Group Vice President and Coordinating Officer of Toyota Motor North America, Inc. (TMA). Based in Washington D.C., he has primary responsibility for ensuring international corporate and government policy coordination between the parent company, Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), and TMA, the holding company for Toyota's North American sales, engineering and production operations.
Goto began his career with TMC’s Domestic Legal Division in 1979 after graduating from the School of Law, Hokkaido University. From 1986 to 1998, he served in various legal divisions focusing on international legal affairs and government affairs. His overseas postings were at Toyota Motor Europe Marketing & Engineering S.A., Brussels, Belgium (1988-1992) and Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., Torrance, California (1996-1998). Returning to Japan, he worked at the head of the International Legal Affairs Department within TMC’s Legal Division and served as General Manager of the Legal Division (2004-2007) and General Manager of the Overseas External Affairs Division (2008-2012).
Goto has been a member of International Trade and Business Committee of Japan Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (2008-2012); member of Advisory Committee attached to the Fair Trade Commission for Anti-monopoly Law and Policy (2006- 2007) and; Vice-Chair of Legal Sub-committee of Japan Automobile Manufacturers’ Association.
He has also been a Visiting Professor of “Corporate Legal Practices” at the Graduate School of Law, Nagoya University (2005-2007) and Hosei University Graduate School of Business Administration (2011-2012).
