Akinori “Axel” Saito is president of TSSC, executive advisor of production control/logistics control and OMDD vice president at Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc. (TEMA), located in Erlanger, Kentucky. TEMA supports Toyota's engineering and manufacturing operations in North America. In his current role, Saito oversees day to day operations for such divisions.
TSSC is a not-for-profit corporation affiliated with TEMA which shares Toyota Production System (TPS) know-how with North American organizations that have a true desire to learn and adopt TPS; as a way to strengthen the quality and efficiency of their production system. Similarly, OMDD works closely with Toyota’s plants and suppliers to help streamline processes and strengthen TPS activities throughout North America.
Saito joined Toyota Motor Corporation in 1985 as a specialist in the operations management consulting division (OMCD) which shares TPS knowledge with Toyota plants and suppliers in Japan. A year later, he was assigned to work at TMC’s Honsha plant where he was responsible for kaizen, quality improvement; safety and new model launch activities.
From 1995-98, he was assigned to the United States as a TSSC manager. In this role, he shared TPS knowledge and provided on-site support to external project companies. Soon after, he returned to TMC as an OMCD manager and was promoted to project general manager in 2004. In 2008, he returned to Kentucky as OMDD’s general manager.
A native of Aichi, Japan; he graduated from Waseda University with a Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Engineering degrees in industrial management engineering.
